There’s been a recent spate of guys posting questions on here about a troublesome appliance and when questioned say: –

“……no I didn’t get round to Meggering the motor!”
“……I’m going back tomorrow, I’ll Megger it then!”
“……nah, I never got round to meggering it as it was working!”

Most of us know how essential, vital even, it is to carry out a basic insulation test on an appliance both before and after the ‘repair’. Fault finding so so simple armed with one leading to swift fault diagnosis. Many though, many likely as not new to the game and haven’t got around to buying an insulation tester (aka Megger). Some not got a clue how to use one even if they had one. Others frightened to ask………….whatever the reason and to help you once more I enclose a link to the downloads section where all with be revealed: –

Isn’t it still the case these tests are a legal requirement and not a matter of choice!

As daft as it sounds I cannot imagine life without my Megger, when I served my time it was mandatory to use the Megger before and after a repair and that has lived on with me. Not only has it lived on it has so many times steered me to the source of the problem which without a megger you would not have found.

I have lost count of the number of engineers who do not even own such a piece of equipment and rely on a Multitester for such tasks ! or the stock answer that ” well I have never really needed one ! or Oh One of them things ! their a load of bother cause if you get a earth problem you could be there hours trying to find it !

I kid you not I have come into contact with such individuals and it beggers belief that they operate like this, No its not a legal requirement but extremely good practice on the engineers part to perform such tests.

I guess its what your use too, some engineers find it easier to change a component than faff about testing it with a meter, i’ve certainly got caught out meggering something to find it only fails on the product, but that could be discussed till the world ends.

At the end of the day there is no right or wrong, but it would be nice to have proper qualification and standard for our industry.

Although I fear our industry may become the way of the Kirby brand, that the guy servicing your product is a salesman only interested in selling a newer version, than maintaining your current product.
