ParticipantHi, I have a 10 year old Die Detrich side by side fridge freezer and a few days ago the temp in the freezer rose so that some items started defrosting and the fridge was a bit warmer than it should be. However, it then started working properly again, temps going down to normal. Then, it goes up again! This happens sporadically from one day to the next.
The same thing happened last year but for only a couple of days before going back to normal and lasting until now.
Any ideas what’s wrong with it? And how much it might cost to repair it. I am wondering if it is worth repairing or getting a new GE or Amana or Siemens to replace it.
Many thanks!

It looks like a rebadged Maytag unit.
Check that the condenser is clear (the black radiator looking bit underneath) as well as the front vents as they get well clogged up with dust. This can lead you to getting the compressor cutting out from overheating, especially in warmer weather.
Around the back, yes it has to come out, there’s a panel at the bottom, a soft flexible one, take that off. In behind it make sure that’s all clean and clear including the fan motor that you will see. That fan motor cools the compressor, if it’s not working you’ll get it overheating and cutting out.
Other than that I’d say it was an engineer you need.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll give it a clean front and back, and see if that sorts it.

Success! I cleaned it at the front, which was full of dust, and at the back, which had less but still needed doing, and for the last five days the temps have been steady except for one morning when the freezer went from -23 to -10 for a short period. Could that have been a result of the defrost cycle?
Anyway, thanks for the help. I’ll be cleaning it regularly from now on!

Hi pj,
Yes, that sounds like the defrost cycle on one of those.
Glad it’s resolved.
