    That big clamp band is not the best device for a reliable seal of the backplate so you do always need to either renew the rubber gasket or add a bead of silicone sealant if re-using the old one. Of course the leak may be from the door seal!

    The leak was from two places, one was the tub seal and the other was the heater element seal. I replaced tub seal and that is now cured of leaks. I took out the element and it looked a different shape from the APM8512 picture – almost 30 degrees out of true. I must have bent it big style in my efforts either getting the drum in or out. Ordered a new element tonight as I think that the element may be pushing the seal awkwardly.

    Looks like total cost will be around £100 to repair this major fault (with £18 of that my fault for damaging the element).

    I would appreciate any thing to watch out for when replacing the element, especially the tightness of the rubber seal and retainer nuts.

    The element had been bashed by the drum when it fractured bending the back plate hole in the process. Molegripped the element hole to be square.
    New element in – Finished !!!!
