KeymasterHi
I have a split in the top of the door seal which is causing the inner drum to make a noise and vibrate. The machine is now in the garage with tools at the ready but on taking the front & back panels off I cannot see how to progress to take the seal off.
As the seal costs £11 and I read that seals should (depending on the make) be a doddle to replace, probably not on the Diplomat 😕
What would be nice is a good service manual (or door/drum seal replacement method)
Any help is much appreciated as I am washing my horrible squash kit and little nippers’ grubby clothes by hand – and not forgetting wifey is getting grumpier by the minute!
This is an integrated, 5 year old machine and I am pondering whether to bother repairing it (pending manual) or go for an ISE 5 if the dimensions are ok.
CheersRichard

Hi,
Please note the username change made, you should be able to login as usual with the shortened username. Sorry, it’s a site that kids are on and people are easily offended by “provocative” or “contentious” usernames.
I got to it before one of the mods deleted it. 😉
Real sorry but we have to stay family friendly.
The split in the seal isn’t causing vibration, but it will need replaced. There’s likely something else causing that problem but it’s an unusual fault on those machines so long as they’re installed okay on a solid floor.
There is no service manual, never has been as there isn’t for most appliances. 😕

Oops – Sorry, I am used to too many US techie forums not kids mending washing machines!
I tried logging in with amended name to no avail so I created a new one. Good job I have more than one email address!
No manual ? mmm, imagine a car being manufactured without one.
How do service engineers know how to go about repairing whitegoods without manuals – a combination of luck, experience, trial and error?
Oh well credit card bashing time .

Yes, that about sums it up. Even if manuals were available there would be no time to procure them before going out to a job and it would not be cost effective anyway for the less common machines like Diplomat. Your machine is basically a Servis. The seal change is not that easy because of the moulded in drain hose at the bottom. This will need to be secured using debor glue or silicone sealant. You need the lid off and the tub held as far back as it will go. Remove the clamp bands from the front and back of the seal and pull off the old seal. Line up the drain hose bit of the new seal with the corresponding hole in the tub and work the adjacent area of the seal onto the tub lip. Now work round in each direction manipulating the seal onto the tub lip. When the seal is on the tub you need to feed round the inner clamp band ensuring it goes above the drain hose section. Check it is properly in its groove and tighten the band. Now apply adhesive/sealant to the drain hose part and insert it into the hole. Finally work the front of the seal onto the cabinet front and secure it with the metal band.

Many thanks Phidom.
I took off the seal and found it wasn’t really split. The inner drum is quite loose exposing some rough edged part of the seal.
When I turn the drum it seems ok just lots of play if I move it around from the inside. Removed drive belt and spider and the bearing ‘seemed’ ok but if there are inner bearings then they could be worn.
This sounds like a big job removing the whole assy from the case etc.

I’m not sure what you have removed but to change the bearings you would remove the tub backplate, which is stainless steel with an alloy framework / bearing housing. This is not too bad a job for the beginner but I would advise you renew the rubber gasket for the backplate and lay the machine on its front when re-assembling the tub. A new backplate with bearings can be purchased, part No. 718002200.

Thanks again Phidom
I finally got to the root of the problem. The inner drum spider support which is riveted to the drum had fractured in three of the four arms!
I think I have to buy the whole inner drum assembly as the inner drum spindle and support are riveted.
A bit dodgy but I suppose these things happen after 5 years.

Is there a part no for the rubber gasket for the drum assembly?

Just before we go any further here… 😆
Is this an APM8512-0 or an APM8512-1 as there are slight differences, although I have to admit the backplate seal appears the same on both versions. But, if memory serves me, this is one of the ones they changed the actual backplate and bearings on so there may be differences in the drum as well.
Just checking. 😉

All it says in the user manual is 8512/APME.

The spider is available on its own, part No. 236000400 but I was assuming your machine was product No. 010103003. I don’t know if product No. 010103003 -01 01 has a different spider 😕

I think it’s the first version, the APM8512-0 but I’m not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure as the info is a tad sketchy TBH. As in, the info from MFI and a couple of spares suppliers and there’s no easy way it appears to identify which is which.
If it’s the first version the link Chris gave is correct.

Thanks everyone.
New inner drum back in. Fired up but there is a slight leak about 40 cm from the front of the machine in the middle.
I have a feeling it may be the tub back seal which I did not replace with a new one.
I did not look to see how it fitted on the backplate/outerdrum when I took it off though so I might be putting it on the wrong way- if anyone has any pointers that would be very useful.
I will take the back panel off and try and do a quick rinse to see where the leak is tonight.
Apart from that I’m almost there. I now have a new tub seal which I will put on anyway.
Oh, and what a tip to put it on its front when working on the drive and tub seal.
Great site and great advice by an old fashioned, unselfish mind set which you don’t see much now days!
