I have an fault with my Diplomat electric oven where one day I went to set the timer and all the buttons not only do nothing but they just push all the way in without springing out. They all seem to be physically separated from the timer inside.

The odd thing is I can’t see what caused it. I hadn’t done anything to push them too hard and they seemed to be already separated when I went to use it that day.

Anyway, to make matters worse, turning off the oven yesterday the timer reset and is now flashing. I tried turning the power for the timer off and on but it remains flashing, and I can’t set the time so I can’t use the oven as it won’t operate until the time is set!

Given the dead nature of the produce from a support point of view, where’s best to start?

I’m no sparky but am happy to pull panels off (with power isolated of course) to try to reseat the buttons if that’s possible. I won’t be touching any electrics. Really just want a pointer as to how to get the front panel off where the timer is to have a look if it’s a simple and safe DIY fix.

If that’s not possible, an idea of what the fault could be, i.e. just needs reconnecting the buttons, or would it be a replacement timer unit which I understand is very expensive? Just want to get an idea of the cost for a professional repair. I could end up binning the entire oven if it’s a lot, especially as the rear element has gone also so that needs doing (but I can live with it not working for now).

If the buttons aren’t springing back as they should then it’s quite possible that the button assembly has snapped, usually the only long lasting repair is by replacement. You could try taking it apart & if it has snapped glueing the parts together with Araldite but this may not last.

Update – Worked out how to pull the oven from the surround unit and remove the front panel, which was far easier than I thought.

Turns out the ‘spring’ part of the buttons is a rubber strip and that had worked loose. Reason being the assembly is not snapping in place any more at the bottom. Have worked out a way of holding it in place and got the rubber but back and now it’s good again. Or good enough.

Even from new the buttons were a but cheap feeling. It’s a bit rubbish quality really, but then that’s the way of things these days.
