Diplomat ADP8224 (SMEG) Dishwasher – E2 Error Solution

Had an engineer around today to fix an E2 error on a Diplomat ADP8224 which I believe is a SMEG unit.

The engineer fixed the issue by pulling out the whole unit, removing the left hand side cover, and taking off the blue water level “tank”.

Apparently this tank feeds onto the water pressure switch which controls the height of the water in the main unit. My blue tank was full of all kinds of gunk. The engineer cleaned this out by flushing it with high pressure water.

The blue tank was then re-attached, and hey-presto, my first successful wash cycle since moving into this house. Well worth £32 for callout charge and 1 hour of labour. If anyone in Ipswich (Suffolk) wants a recommendation, let me know.

Should say this…. Of course this is probably only one of the possible solutions to an E2 error. God knows what an E2 really is, given that the manual for my model says “E2 – NOT USED ON THIS APPLIANCE”

E2 is a common enough error on this appliance. The instruction booklet often refers E2 to an external Aquastop device on the hose of the appliance. Although the aquastop is not on your appliance E2 certainly is in the form of an anti flood protection float switch. Any build up of sludge in the RH tank can cause this to activate.

E2 can be caused by up to 12 different faults, by far the most common is the side tank being blocked in some manner but it is by no means the only thing that can cause the error to occur. It is with this in mind that we will often recommend that an engineer look at the problem as there is no magic cure for it, nor an easy one as the side chamber (as you saw) is not a two minute DIY job to mess about with.

Most fault codes are a generalised area of failure, they almost never pinpoint the actual failed component or where a blockage is, they are meant as a guideline for an engineer only. Even knowing what the code means only points us in the general direction of where to start looking for the problem. This holds true for almost any electronically controlled appliance I have yet seen.

There are little diagnostic tools for some appliances that can report the failure, Whirlpool use them and so do Meile pretty extensively but they ain’t cheap! Also, when you call in an engineer for some appliances, like Miele, they may well not have the ability to diagnose the fault either without the specialist diagnostic equipment. Many manufacturers will not allow even us in the trade to have that information, or at least make it prohibitively expensive to obtain it so they can charge what they want for a repair as nobody else can, or will, touch it.

But customers will be swayed by a few flashing LEDs or nice VFD/LCD displays, especially if they’re nice blue ones, you can end up paying a big premium for that at a later date though. 😕

thanks for the advice re diplomat E2 problem. We have not been able to solve the problem so we are waiting for a repair man to come out.
Do have another mystery though re the Diplomat. In the display window there is a symbol that is not listed in the handbook.
There are three vertical squiggly lines with a cross through. Any ideas what this indicates?
