ParticipantHi all – apologies if you’ve answered this one someone else before – I checked using the search but couldn’t find anything specific.
I’ve recently moved into a new flat with a fitted kitched. The integral dishwasher is a Diplomat ADP8234. This worked fine for the first coupe of weeks, but is now throwing an error and not draining properly.
(I’ll also mention that the LCD display appears to be corrupt – it doesn’t show the top couple of segments of the 7-segment displays for the programme number / error code – luckily its still possible to work out what its trying to say! – not sure if this is relevant or not to the problem, but its been like this since we moved in)
When you start the programme (P4 – normal wash) it sounds like it drains correctly and then fills and then appears to make healthy dishwasher noises for a while. However, after 30 mins or so it all goes quiet except for a continual quiet buzz coming from the machine. Every 10 mins or so it makes a brief, very unhealthy sounding noise – difficult to describe, but a bit like a mechanical buzzer going off).
This goes on for another hour or so (so I assume its trying to run through the normal wash programme). When this hour is up, the dishwasher can be opened. The display panel shows an E1 error which the manual says means the overfilling sensor has been tripped). There is water in the bottom dishwasher (soapy and quite hot), and it bearly touches the bottom of the fillament.
Previously, I had cycled the mains power (I left it off for 30 mins or so) and the dishwasher appeared to then run through a P4 normal wash programme with no issues. However, the very next time I ran the machine, the problem described happened again.
Any advice on how to deal with this problem? Is there a chance the fill sensor is faulty and can this be fixed?
Many thanks in advance – this looks like a very informative forum from what i’ve read on other posts.
Cheers,
John.

E1 is the flood protection system operating – water has leaked into the lower base of the machine and tripped the float switch, which over-rides the programme. Machine should drain, although until the water level drops in the under tray or the power is cut the drain pump continues to run. So………. find the leak.
However, your comments about the display being corrupted are rather worrying. This does point to problems with the computer. These can be awkward to diagnose, so perhaps time to seek pro help? Check the link in my signature.
Power off before going inside.

Thanks for the help Penguin45.
Are there some specific parts of the machine worth checking to see if I can identify the leak? If I’m understanding you correctly you’re saying the float switch is underneath the main cavity of the dishwasher… is there an easy way to get down there?
After searching this forum using Google Site search (the inbuilt forum search seemed to miss many posts) I noticed someone saying that 4-in-1/3-in-1 tablets should not be used with these machines. We have been using these tablets and I have noticed quite a bit of froth previously when the machine has finished. What’s the general advice on these forms of detergent?
Many thanks again,
John.

The 4 in 1 may be the underlying cause, try using it without any detergent/empty and see what happens 🙂

Thanks – I’ll give it an empty run tonight and see what it does.

Well I ran it empty and without detergent this evening and I’m afraid I got the same error (E1) with the same amount of water in the bottom (just touching the filament, but this time clear and hot instead of soapy and hot).
It would appear I have a genuine, non-detergent related problem. I’ve had a brief look around the main cavity of the dishwasher and noticed that the small sensor that sits directly below the filament on the left hand side (is this the thermostat?) seems to have lost most of its waterproofing. By this I mean that the rubbery sealant that should seal the bottom of the black rubber surrounding the sensor appears to have peeled away. Could this be the source of my leak?
Also – where does the water leak to and where is the float switch? I assume there is a cavity below the main cavity but how do you access this?
Many thanks for all your help,
John.

BTW – I’ve just thought – given that the LCD display seems to be missing the top-right two segments of the first two 7-segment character displays – the error code *could* be E7 and not E1. The manual I’ve got doesn’t mention this error code, but you never know…

Yep ! 😀
It leaks in to the base tray and activates the flood protector. Replacing the thermosat seal may resolve the problem but to be honest as we have now ruled out (hopefully) any major expense of a PCB fault I would ask an engineer to call and check the whole thing over.
Try the repairs@ link at the bottom of my post 🙂

Sorry – just two more questions:
* How do you get to the area below the main cavity? I assume the access is from underneath or ’round the back’?
* If I were to reseal the thermostat myself what sort of sealant should I use? Are there likely to be suitable silicone sealants available in my local DIY store (i.e. for use near eating utensils, high temperature, fully submerged)?
Cheers,
John.

You’d be better off replacing the seal to be honest if it has become that perished.
Part number 754131078 at £8.35 inc VAT and carriage, an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk please if you’d like one ordered 🙂
As far as fitting it goes, we can’t give a blow by blow desription but needless to say it has to be uninstalled and accessed from below, hence my recommendation to ask an engineer to come and carry out the repair 😉
