Diplomat ADP8242 Integrated Salty questions

I’ve just moved into the house and this is my first experince with a dishwasher so if possible could you answer a couple of questions.
1 The salt container on the floor of the machine is always full of water, should this be like this? If not whats the best thing to do.
The machine seems to run OK but everything tastes of salt when it comes out, do I have a problem with the salt system?

On a different note, I have just received the instruction book as a pdf file from MFI so thanks to them for being so efficient!

The salt reservoir will always be full of water (except if the machine is brand new; in that case it will be virtually empty). When you add salt, it is normal for water to overflow out of the container, and thus into the wash-tub area.

Salty crockery would normally indicate that the lid is not on correctly, or on tightly enough (hand-tight is sufficient). The lid may be split or cracked. When refilling with salt, be sure to remove any salt grains from the screw thread of the reservoir and lid, to ensure a good seal.

Or alternatively the valve in the softener is failing to shut off completely which means whenever the appliance takes in water, some of that water is flushing through the salt pot and into the wash water. This is indicated by the salt being consumed rapidly…you should expect a full reservoir to last in the order of four or five weeks at one wash a day in hard water areas…

Unfortunately the only cure for that is a new softener unit which is not really a DIY job.
