ParticipantI have a Diplomat APL 8215 which is about 6 yrs old and lately it does not seem to be bringing in any water. If I open the door a couple of minutes after starting, it smells of burings and the element is red hot and the machine full of steam. If I manually put water into it, the machine appears to work ok and at the end of the cycle it pumps out ok. On one occasion when I have looked in there has been a little bit of water in there but generally it is empty with the exception of the filter assy in the middle of the base. Any ideas

It sounds like a water level control problem to me but are you sure it works correctly when filled manually (which isn’t really advisable by the way) ?
I’m thinking it could also be a water circulation problem, but then it wouldn’t spray at all even if it had the correct level of water in it.

It appears to work ok, in so much as, when I open the door, the 2 arms are spinning and the water is being sprayed around the machine. I have had a look through the rest of the site and although there is not an APL 8215 listed, there are some other diplomats with the same problem, and it is sometimes down to the wiring harness that goes from the door to the main body of the machine. If it is not the wiring, what other things should I be looking at. Would be grateful for some direction. Thanks

Water level problem then.
All Diplomats aren’t the same though, most of the postings about them relate to error codes which are Smeg made, yours is a Brandt produced version.
You could check the wiring as it does happen on occasion, apart from that it’s a pressure switch and/or blockage problem.
Don’t forget to pull the plug :zap:

Many thanks for the reply. I will check the wiring over the next couple of days. When you say a blockage, I assume you mean a blockage somewhere between the end of the inlet hose and where it enters the main body of the machine, can I check this. Also, is there a check I can do on the pressure switch, can you advise where it is located. Finally, how much is a pressure switch likely to cost.

actually the blockage can be either in the metering tank on the left hand side and/or the hoses that connect it to the sump. They are known for breaking wires in the door and that usually causes them not to fill but it wouldn’t put the heater on and try to wash if that were the case.

I checked the wiring last night and all appears to be OK. Could you please tell me if it is easy enough for a “DIYer” to check for blockages in the metering tank or hoses as you have suggested; how would I gain access to these. Also, where is the pressure switch located and how much is a replacement.

Not really a DIY job to be honest going any further.
Given that we can’t really go much further than the advice we have already given without overstepping the EU regulations on technical advice etc.
Best bet is ask an engineer to sort the problem, have a look in the directories and repairs@ there should be someone there that can help.

Must have had my eyes closed when I first checked, cause when I had a closer look at the electrical harness last night, there are 3 small cuts in the plastic insulation, 2 are minor and 1 is almost all the way through – although it is still connected. Can you please tell me how much an electrical harness is and whether you think these wiring faults could be causing my problem.

by the sound of it an engineer could successfully repair the harness rather than replacing it altogether, but if the wires are not completely broken then the problem is definitely elsewhere.

sounds like the timer is getting over cammed and missing the fill position if this occurs itwill still bring the heating element on the over camming usaully happens on the eco cycle as there is no compulsary drain at the start of the program

Marti,
Please sign up as a member – we appreciate all imput, but if we like to know who we’re dealing with!Timer faults are unusual with these machines – it is possible – I would get the wiring sorted first and ensure that the water level control system is fully functional before the expensive investment in a timer.
Do nothing yourself without pulling the plug first.
