ParticipantHello and thanks for this site. I have built in Fridge/Freezer Diplomat APM6842 which is about 7 years old and just packed it in.
I cleaned the fridge yesterday morning, just wiping it out. In the evening, I checked and the fridge was 12 degrees. I thought, hmm, little warm and turned it up to 7. This morning the fridge started making a lot of noise. So I switched off on the mains, left it down for a couple of minutes and turned it on again, BUT nothing happend, no noise no nothing. I do have a light but the fridge is now at 18 degrees and the freezer is slowly defrosting (got a lot of cooking to do tomorrow). I switched off the mains again and on to see if I hear anything but nothing.
Any ideas what it could be? Thermostat, motor? Is it worth getting someone in to fix it or would it be better to get a new one since it is already 7 years old or even better, should I attempt to fix it myself?
All your help and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Pippaki

If the fridge was noisey could have been the motor in “the final throws”.Unless you are competent with a test meter it’s probably worth spending the cost of a call out to establish the fault before you make a decision either way.
Thermosts’s are around £38 ish,not a dificult job for a resonably competent person.
Motor fitting cost approaches £200 and an engineers job only.April 10, 2009 at 12:38 pm #282860Pippaki

Thank you very much for the repy. I think we I will be better off buying a new fridge/freezer. I have found one fairly cheap, INDESIT INC325. I am just not sure about the size. Could anyone advise what the DIPLOMAT APM6842 specifications are? I measured H: 178, W: 54, D: 45. The INDESIT model has a bigger depth?
Thanks

If you have taken your old one out measure the depth you have available, the indesit one may well be OK,as there could be spare room at the back.
Check with indesit specification for size and then check the cupboard that it fits in.
While you have it out check that there is sufficient ventilation ie a gap at the top through which warm air can escape and an equal gap at the bottom so it can pass through easily. Many fridges in built in circumstances aren’t given enough ventilation by the kitchen fitters, consequently they struggle and fail ecause of it sometimes. -
