Morning all, diplomat combined washer/dryer. Started causing problems the last two weeks. Normal load in, the drum will turn for approx 6 to 10 revolutions as part of the wash cycle and then stops. Machine gives a noise as if under strain, you can see the drum attempting to revolve but doesn’t seem to be enough oomph to complete the revolution. Same symptoms forward and reverse. Thought it might be out of balance, have thrown in a few more dry items and again, will turn for a few cycles then same symptoms.

Machine drains okay and when I forward to spin it seems to spin at half speed and does rock about quite a bit.

Rather spend circa £40 – £50 than the £300 on the new washing machine the missus has her eye on. I’m quite happy to have a stab at fixing this myself, but what should I be looking at first, brushes or motor?

    Cheers

Hi – the drum struggling to turn under load is symptomatic of a defective start capacitor (usually found at the rear top R/H corner of the m/c near the mains filter which looks similar). The capacitor on this is 22mF and can be found in the store for £7.27. Worth a try at this price.

PS. DON’T FORGET TO PULL THE PLUG BEFORE STARTING WORK!!!!

£300 gets you very average, poor quality appliances, £450/£500 gets you half decent, £800+ gets you good.

Try and get it sorted first but don’t waste £300 on any current machine. 😉
