    Hi,

I’ve got a built-in Diplomat Select gas hob (I’m afraid I can’t find the model number, but it’s at least 10 years old) and last night the igniter started clicking on its own and it won’t stop unless we turn off the power at the wall. This also disables the electric oven so we can’t cook anything. As far as I can tell, the problem is nothing to do with the igniter knob being stuck down.

I would really appreciate help with 2 questions:

    1. What is causing this and is there anything I can try to fix it?

    2. If I can’t fix it and have to call an engineer, is it safe to carry on using our hob and oven in the meantime?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi
The hob should have its own mains feed from a plugtop rated at 3amp or up to 3amp spur and not fed off the oven.
The model will be underneath the hob itself 😀
Its most probably a faulty ignition switch but we don’t advise the public in repairing gas appliances, for their own safety 😉

Thanks for the quick reply. Both the hob ingniter and the oven turn off at the main cooker switch. Does this mean the hob will be hard wired into that, or am I looking for a separate switch/socket behind the kitchen units?

(I had a look behind and under the cupbards, but everything, including the oven, is fixed and immovable, so visibility is limited and I couldn’t see anything.)

Also, if I am unable to do anything myself, can I still use the cooker while I wait for an engineer? For various reasons, this has happened at a particularly bad time so it could be some days before I am able to be in to wait for an engineer, and not being able to cook is a pain.

Understood 😉 I just wondered if there was something simple and not risky I could try before resorting to an engineer callout. There is no way I would touch anything connected with the gas.

You will probably find that the power supply is behind the oven which can be removed by taking the screws out at the front that screw into the cupboard, the fault is the ign generator which has the switch built ito it, it may dry out and stop clicking but if not I would just unplug it and light it manually as a repair would cost nearly as much as a new hob and installation.
