KeymasterHi, wondered if anyone might be able to shed some light!!
have a diplomat integrated tumble dryer which trip the rcd the othe day after been on 10 mins.Having had the machine apart earlier in year to replace a couple of stats, and quite handy, took it out and checked continuity of wiring etc, thinking it was possibly either motor or element. Neighbour who is an electrician advised to hover fluff off motor windings etc…..did all this and turned on. It has run ok for two or more hours. Put it on again today for most of afternoon and evening without a problem, but it has just tripped rcd again. reset rcd and switched on and tripped again, so it must be the tumble, but why run ok for ages and then go? any sugesstions??
thanks, Tim

ParticipantTim,
Pop the model number – a Dippy tumble dryer is quite an unusual beast, so we may need to call it up from tech info to see what we’re up againstRegards,

KeymasterTim,
the model number is required, but also how old is the dryer and has it just started to do this? I’m curious as I’v ehad one or two do this on an intermitant basis (the engineers worst nightmare) and I’d like to solve the puzzle. It bugs me. 😉

hi,
its apm8260 which is hygena, but branded as diplomat apm 8260. Its got to be at least 3-4 years old now, nearer the 4!. Only just started to do this and doesnt seem to be from cold. Dont know if its worth taking the motor to local shop to get it checked and coil if motor ok?

It’s an APM8620, which is a Crosslee unit, the same as White Knight.
The most likely causes are the element and possibly the mains supressor.
Please pull the plug before investigating :plug:

plug always pulled!
no problem with heater element, but what does the mains spressor look like/located?

Yeah, I would stick with the one you’ve got, they’re pretty good generally.
The suppressor is a capacitor connected across the mains terminals.
Are you 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure the heater is OK ? As you say it doesn’t happen from cold this is indicative of insulation break down when hot – quite a common occurance.
A 500V meggar will be the only true way of testing, or run the dryer with the heater disconnected and see what happens 😉

hi,
i can disconnect the motor and get that check…. i presume the capacitor connected to that is what you are referring too?
as for disconnecting heater, i was going to do that but wasnt sure if pulling all spades from it would still let machine run or if i had to connect them in some way… i thought doing this though would be a sure way of tripping rcd as no resistance of element present??
thanks, tim

update:
just tried dryer again and tripped straight away…drum managed one revolution so i suppose does that rule out breaking down when hot?….
what should i be trying first?
thanks 🙂

Nope, it confirms it more than anything.
Disconnecting the element will not cause the RCD to trip, try that 1st 😉

😀 many thanks, Dave,
will do that tonite and post any results!
Just one more question…. there are 4 element connections1 – 2 black wires, one to loom other to stat
2 – red
3 and 4 – blue wire to reset switch
do i disconnect all and leave them ‘hanging’ ??thanks, Tim

I have to say we are entering a bad zone here fella’s.
Leaving wires hanging is not the way and Dave you should answer accordingly.
Whilst we are here to help, as moderator I have to now ask dave to re think his advice from this point.
We have to BE SAFE at all times.
Sorry

Indeed Kevin !
Sorry, I got a bit carried away with the advice there 😳
Disconnecting the element while the appliance is running is not a good idea at all.
I would suggest that the element is removed and taken for testing or better still, call an engineer to make a correct diagnosis for you.
Dave.

KeymasterRe: diplomat tumble dryer triping rcd
Thanks for all advice…… I wasnt going to disconnect with appliance running, but understand safety issues completely.
I will disconnect element and try and get it tested…. is it worth me having motor tested aswell or does it look pretty much as though the element is at fault…. ?Out of interest would it be safe to remove element and insulate tape spades and run machine to see if rcd trips or would machine run at all?
Thanks again and appreciate help.
