ParticipantI have Indesit RIT50E and a few days a ago I hired cleaners for the whole kitchen and when they started cleaning the oven they advised me on cleaning it regularly – every few months or if not they told me to hire professional cleaners once a year. They’ve said that this will prevent fire and will lower the energy consumption. My question is, should I trust these guys? Is there really a chance of fire with a dirty oven or this is not possible? I know that with commercial kitchens this definitely is the case and they should be regularly cleaned because grease is flammable but I know nothing about domestic ovens. Actually, they did a good job but I was curious if they are not trying to sell me more services or something. The company is called maggies oven services so depending on your advice I’ll make my decision If I should call them again or not. Thanks in advance.

It makes sense to clean the oven regularly of course but catching fire as a result of fat saturation is far too melodramatic it would be laughable. Avoid fat spitting by reducing the temperature. Wipe up spillage as soon as the oven is cool. Remove empty shelves in the oven. Adjust the grill pan height if spitting fat occurs.
The energy consumption line is total tosh by the way.

Err, Martin….
I’ve seen numerous fires caused by fat build up. Primarily when grilling but it can happen when using a static oven function as well.
Every single oven “fire” I’ve seen has been as a result of that or something in the oven that shouldn’t be, left till ignited.
So yes, it is important to ensure that it doesn’t get too much grease build up or, it can go.
Melodramatic perhaps, if it never happens to you.

So even though it is very unlikely to happen it’s actually possible. Thank you!

Yes of course it is Johnny but seriously speaking the whole oven and grill area would need to be saturated in fat for this to ever happen.
Whilst I acknowledge my colleagues comments to some degree fires directly associated to oven and grills are very unlikely. Chip pan/hob fire yes, big problem. But ovens……no.
