Dishwahser diagnosis

We have just a the dishwahser repair man out a week or so ago the dishwasher tripped the electrics. When I pulled the machine out it wet underneath so we called out the manufactures engineer.

He said that the sump leaked and filled up the bottom where the anti flood device is, which then over leaked onto the motor and burnt it out. The repairs are in excess of the insurance policy so he can’t do anything unless we want to pay for it ourselves.

To be honest I don’t question anyone when they repair our appliances I prefer my OH to be her but it didnt make sense to me that he said the motor had burnt out when I have still been using the machine and it has worked fine. After it tripped the electrics I left it a few days and washed by hand, but if tried it a few days ago and it worked fine even last night.

Obviously I know not to use it now but surely if the motor had burnt out it wouldn’t have worked fine last night ??

The water leak obviously came into contact with the motor to then cause the RCD to trip. From what you say the motor has NOT burnt out so therefore the diagnosis was incorrect. What is the make and model of this machine anyway?

Hi, it’s a bosch sms50e02gb.

Would the motor still need replacing ? I thought the anti flood device would stop it working all together until the red lever had been reset. All I did was leave it a couple of days then tried it again and it was ok. I did keep checking for water underneath though.

He said it will cost £320 to repair but the insurance only covers £300 so the cover will be cancelled and we could either pay for it yo be repaired or replace the machine.

Iv pulled it out to see if any excess water came out when he looked at it and there’re a pile of screws on the lid and the power cable and polystyrene inside.

I looked on espares and the only motor for our model wasn’t that expensive so I dont think that can be the right part comapred to some motors for other models which were well ver £100.

I dont know weather to ask for a second visit from another technician.

We have no luck with appliances …

Why not challenge the diagnosis and ask the question of them as to how come their guy said the motor was burnt out when it still works? You paid insurance in good faith you expect proper diagnosis. A second opinion wouldn’t go amiss at this stage.

To be honest if my other half was here he would have but I thought I would have been lectured about using the machine when it had leaked and had tripped the electrics ! Iv had a bad experience with the same technician when he came to look at our fridge (all out appliances are bosch unfortantly) he dismissed the reason when I said the cause he told couldn’t have the cause, and no repair was done. I was going to complain about it but as the fridge is working and it’s jsut one do the functions (super cold) that’s didn’t work I left it. Now I just think we have a technician that’s not really bothered. Think I will get the OH on the phone tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks for your advice x

My OH just received an email with the report on. It’s says the sump leaked, and because the anti flood switch burnt out it water kept filling the base causing an earth fault in the motor. Repair costs in excess of insurance policy.

So I must have got the wrong end if the stick.

Oh well ! New dishwasher for me and it won’t be a bosch. Still don’t like the technician from not fixing the fridge ! Lol

That is a nonesense of contradictions from them, though there is little or nothing you can do to challenge that. Short of getting another independent company in to inspect the appliance. (I would revel in the opportunity)

Firstly it is next to impossible for the anti flood switch to burn out, they just don’t, besides if that were to happen the RCD would have tripped immediately. The only instances of anti flood switch problems I have regularly encountered, in my several 1000’s of Bosch dishwashers I have attended, is from rodent damage. Mice love to chew and jam up the anti flood float (not the switch). The immediately activates the drain pump and the machine is rendered safe from flooding.

Secondly, if the base were to flood other electrical components, would trip the RCD before the motor terminal point could ever be compromised.

Their report is a tissue of untruths……. 🙁

I suppose a second opinion would cost a lot of money though ? I don’t Really want to get a new machine but the fact that I have had problems with this technician before I think I would be better off getting a new one. Iv seen the new Eco Beko which I might just get and always keep an extended warranty on it. Frustrating but heho, such is life I suppose x
