ParticipantI’m on the lookout for a portable dishwasher in Austria, but starting to realize that my building is terribly constructed, and there are no valves anywhere near the sink, and I have no access to a main shutoff valve. So! Do I have any options other than hand washing? Can European dishwashers be attached to the sink faucet with an appropriate adapter?
(Side note: I saw this thingy: http://www.carocelle.com/ ), which looks pretty info-mercial-y, but if it works, I’m interested. Anyone encountered one of these in real life? Also, for 4 place-settings, it seems to use 10 gallons of hot water per go, but no electricity. Is this environmentally brutal, or not so bad, given the no-electricity part (of course, energy to pump and heat water counts)?)r counts)?)April 10, 2008 at 3:24 pm #248708iadom

There are a few small dishwashers available, normally called ‘table top dishwashers’ They do tend to be quite expensive though.
Bosch and Zanussi make them to name just two.
It is possible to mount them next to a sink and use a suitable adaptor for the cold water feed from the tap ( faucet).
As for that Carocelle thing, you would be better off washing them by hand, it would save you a fortune on hot water. There is no way your domestic hot water supply will be hot enough to clean dishes properly in a dishwasher of that type unless it is set to a dangerously high temperature level.

I saw a few countertop models at the store, but they seemed to have the same plumbing in the back as all the other models; is there something special about them that allows for running off of the faucet hookup? (Or can any dishwasher run off of a faucet with a suitable adapter?)

First things first, this is the UK, over here we have TAPS, not faucets, 😉 😀
It really depends upon the type and shape of TAP you have. Many years ago it was quite common for automatic washing machines to be connected to the hot & cold TAPS with the waste water pipe placed into the sink. This was long before fitted kitchens became the norm.
As long as you have a suitable adaptor to connect the dishwasher inlet pipe to the TAP without the water spraying all over the place then it should work fine.
There used to be many different types of adaptor available in the UK for different types of TAPS, now it is very rare to see them in use.
Several types HERE to choose from.
