    Daughter was left minding the house for a few days and managed to put dishwasher powder in the salt reservoir. Is this likely to cause any damage?

    Very much so! Do not use the machine until you’ve got it all out. Scoop it out or flush it out or better still wet vac it out!

    Thanks Martin, it’s already been run a few times – what is the likely effect of the dishwasher powder on the water softener device/matrix?

    Detergents chemicals can easily filter into the resin ion exchanger unit, clog the resin crystals and render the whole softening unit useless.
