I have a 4 yr-old FF7190 [looks like an American style, but one-sided]. There is a loud knocking/rumbling sound while the fan runs. Unplugged the machine and emptied the freezer and removed 4 screws which, together with 4 slot-style clips, held on the rear cover panel of the cabinet. Removing this cover revealed the distribution channels to the 6 outlets from the centrally mounted fan. This rear half of the distribution box would need to come off to gain access to the fan motor. Removing the 2 screws was no help, but there aren’t any obvious clips around the edge. I’m pretty sure the fan motor needs replacing, as there is over a millimetre of end float on it, and nothing anywhere near fouling the turning blades.
BUT… How do I gain access, please?

I have removed cover 29 to reveal backplate 24, which has a screw either side of fan. Removing these doesn’t allow removal of 24 to access fan, yet I can’t see any clips around the edge, nor fit in a blade around edges to release any hidden clips, as the fit is so tight. There is no ‘give’ at all. In the diagram, cover plate 27 is a mystery, as it seems to be in the ceiling of the freezer cabinet, but there is no such thing in mine. How can I access the fan, as there is no access from the rear outside of the freezer either. Maybe there is a way I can upload jpegs to show what I mean? AHA!

The panel 24 ( inner one ) is clipped in place down the sides, from memory, you have to insert a flat blade screwdriver and unclip the panel for access to the fan motor.

Many thanks – yes, looking at the exploded drawing in good quality, I can see three pips down the side and 2 at top. I’ve ordered a fan and when it comes I’ll tackle it with a non-flexible scraper and some nylon wedges. From experience dismantling car interiors at least some of these pips will break off, so I have the gorilla tape on a short leash! Was not impressed with Hotpoint’s attitude of “We’re happy to sell you any part, but couldn’t possibly give you technical advice… Think of the HSE implications!” as against the experience with Neff, who gladly rang back and put a technician on the phone for a half hour to guide me as I did similar on their washing machine :(. Guess what I’ll buy next time!

Yay! It’s time to thank you for real: I finally got the panel off, using thin and thick steel scrapers for accessing and springing, wood wedges for holding clips off, and mole wrench for pulling!!. New fan is brilliantly quiet, though I was a bit worried by the fact that the new motor appeared to rotate the opposite way, which it does, so you do have to use the new fan, which is of course the opposite pitch.

    Well done.
