Had a call out today with the reported fault that the customers washing machine was tripping the RCD, So out I go & find that she has a Beko machine that sure enough trips the RCD as soon as you turn it on. First thing I do on any call is a Loop test on the socket, as soon as I pressed the button off goes the RCD. Strange as my tester has a good RCD lock. Anyway I took the front off the socket & found a mess which I sorted out, but Fault was still there so I went to the next socket & sorted another mess. At this point the customer comes back to the kitchen & says: Oh my husband finally got round to wiring those up yesterday, anyway I followed the wiring back to half a Junction box hidden behind a cupboard i.e no top with all wires exposed. This is where I found out what the idiot had done: He’d Connected the incoming Neutral to the outgoing Earth & vice versa, 😈 no wonder the RCD Tripped out when you put a load on it. Replaced the junction box with a nice new 1 properly wired & everything was back to normal. Then she has the nerve to tell me how good her husband is with Electrics :eeek: I hate DIY Electricians.

Oh yes mate & added a bit extra for her cheek Lol. Also told her to suggest her husband leaves Electrics to people who know what they’re doing before he kills someone, sort of got the idea that it was falling on Deaf ears though.

    Re: DIY Electrics.

That is something I find a lot. Mention what they have done can have fatal consequences and they go all yeah whatever. Had one yesterday, ****head had left the top off a wm52, live electrics round the timer, machine next to the draining board. When I mentioned this his clever arse g/f said “And thats why we haven’t washed up today”. Why don’t some people just admit they f88ked up rather than trying to be clever.

    Re: DIY Electrics.

Had a call from the guy earlier, wanting to know what right I thought I had telling his missus that he was dangerous. Explained what i’d found & he told me there was no Danger in the junction box not having a lid because it was behind a cupboard & he did’nt believe the wiring was reversed. I stopped wasting my breath & told him to ring someone else in future. As for admitting they f***ked up mate, I don’t think it’s in a punters nature. They seem to think it’s us being awkward so we can charge more.

    DIY Electrics.

one christmas eve I called to a customer, matsui dishwasher for currys, needed new pcb. Pulled it out and couldn’t find the plug, asked customer and he started being an arse and said he didn’t know, said he would switch the mains off, not happy I pulled the cooker out to find he had wired the dishwasher to the cooker terminals and the cooker cable was in 3 core flex as well! I told him how bad this was and he kicked off calling me all manner of stuff, whilst he was having his pre christmas tantrum I was packing my tools away after disconnecting his dishwasher and cooker, I informed him to seek the services of an electrician as I was leaving. He asked if I was happy that I had ruined his familys christmas, I replied that I was happy that his family would be around for at least one more.

Yep: Some of the attitudes are totally unbelievable, I know we all like to save a bit of cash nowadays & i’ve got nothing against DIY. It makes me wonder how some of them sleep at night knowing the risk to their families, I went to a job a while back with a Gas fitter friend. Customer said they heard a bang & the heating went off, anyway when we got there & checked it out we found that her idiot partner had done the wiring for the boiler / utility room. He’d spurred a length of 1mm T/E off the kitchen ring to feed the boiler spur, then wired 3 double sockets of that in 1.5mm 3 core flex. The boiler was wired in 0.75 2 core flex & this was wrapped around the pipes inside the boiler & this is what finally melted to the pipes and caused the bang. When we spoke to her partner, there was no way he would believe that he could have killed them all. He reckoned his wiring must have been ok because it had worked for 6 months 😯 😈
