ParticipantI was contacted by a customer today for a price to fit a new compressor to an RSH1.
I asked how he new the compressor was faulty and he said a Samsung engineer had called because he had phoned them because the fridge compartment was not cold enough.
As the fridge freezer was less than 3 years old Samsung would send an
Engineer to fit modifications to it.The customer said when the engineer called he said he had 6 modifications to fit.
He said he did not think the compressor was working right as the fridge was not cold enough .
This is the normal sign of the fan iced up not a compressor fault.
The customer said the engineer said he would check the compressor before fitting the mods.
The customer said the engineer then fitted a line tap valve and opened the valve and the compressor started to make a loader noise.
I enquired if the engineer had used any gauge’s and the customer said no
The compressor was running and he just opened the valve and said the compressor is not pumping and he would not fit any mods as this was not covered as out of warranty.I have advised the customer I will inspect the appliance as the engineer may have now made this appliance not repairable as he has now introduced air into the system and reduced the life of the appliance and possibly ruined a good compressor.
The customer said since the SAMSUNG engineer has called the freezer has fully defrosted.
I have arranged a call for Monday to inspect as the engineer
May have destroyed any chance of repairing it.I will keep you updated Monday after I have inspected it.

If the fuse board mod hadn’t already been fitted, Samsung would replace the compressor foc

Not always true,It depends if you scream loud enough. But concerning do they check if your refrigeration trained or to what standard ..NO

Directive from Samsung is, any visit that hasn’t had fuse board fitted,1st repair is foc . If the service partner is doing their job properly, there should be no need for customer to scream loudly .July 16, 2012 at 2:48 pm #378116SAMURI

Visited today line tap fitted no gas in appliance and dust cap for line tap valve in a box beside the compressor.
Line tap valve leaking no other leaks found but compressor not pumping.
Inspected behind fridge evaporator and it was a surprise the liner was perfect and not burnt or split like you normaly find.
I did not fit a new compressor as mods have not been fitted and the system has been contaminated with Air.
I have given the customer a report so he can go back to Samsung.
If I hear any feedback I will post it here.

Did you ask if he arrived on a horse called trigger ? 😉July 16, 2012 at 5:52 pm #378118SAMURI

The customer said he was due to call between 3 & 5pm but he arrived late at 6.30pm.
So he may have arrived on Trigger and he was not singing.
I don’t think it was the lone ranger because he did not have Tonto with him and the customer did not say he said Hi Ho Silver when leaving.
But who is this masked man.
The customer did say the engineer said he had recently been made redundant by Comet. 😆

I did not enjoy writing this report as I do not enjoy criticizing another engineer.
Giving the fact R600a is a flammable gas and the line tap valve is close to the compressor relay it could have resulted in injury to himself if a spark had occurred.
I hope this gets sorted for the customer without too much fuss by Samsung as at the end of the day all us engineers just do this job to make a living.
I hope this engineer is just given the training he needs by his employer as it is not his fault if he has not been trained to safely handle refrigerants.

You can re-surrect an air filled/contaminated system,as long as the comp is OK, “triple evacuation” ie vac down then charge with OFN (oxygen free nitrogen)release pressure afte 10/15 minutes then vac again, repeat 3 times, mostly done on commercial systems but worth it for an expensive domestic item.
You will notice that the drop back of the vac guage reduces each time as non condensables (air included) are forced out of hiding within the sysytem, especially from the compressor oil, when the vac gauge is static you should have a clean system.
Usually says somewhere on the label the max pressure test that you should use, wont be very high 8 bar perhaps in an HC system as components/evaporators aren’t as heavily built, too much pressure can blow a hole in the evaporator!!July 20, 2012 at 6:32 am #378121SAMURI

Yes I know how to clear systems with OFN.
But can you see a Samsung agent spending the time required to do this correctly on the rates they are paid.
I now know the agent who carried out this job and he is not going to be pleased his new engineer done this.
If I had known it was his company I would have phoned him before doing a report then Samsung may not have to be involved.
I hope he sorts it with Samsung for the customer.
The life of this model is not very long anyway as the cabinets are burning out near the defrost heater damaging the insulation.
If a repair is done then the life of the appliance is reduced on a domestic as possible weakening of joints and R600a is a flammable gas and I would not like to take on Samsungs responsibility for it.
You have to limit your liability in this day and age as the last person to work on the appliance is responsible.

I turned down Samsungs approach/fees some years ago,I didn’t need the work certainly not at their fee’s,different for younger souls with bills to pay etc,do the very occasional one for locals.
Possibly should follow commercials lead where a log book (theoretically)accompanies every fridge/system over a certain size, engineer fills it in with what he has done and customer signs too.

The customer had his second visit today from the owner of the company to give his opinion on what his engineer had done.
He does not know but the customer has an understanding of refrigeration and he said the engineer made himself look stupid.
He said he had run ins with myself before and I am mainly COMERCIAL not domestic this is a lie.
He said to the customer his engineer had used a gauge but it was a very small gauge.
He also said it is normal to sometimes suck in some air to the system and this happens all the time and it is not harmfull.
The customer has said to me if the engineer used a small gauge then you must need a microscope to see it.
The engineer told him if he wants it fixed it will cost him £312
The customer is sending Samsung a strong letter along with my report.
I will keep you updated with the results.

I bet the customers rose garden will look a treat in a few months with all the free horse tish they will be collecting of the drive.
You would think Samsung would test the ablities of these “engineers” before letting them lose on the public, would be interesting to see his C.O.P. figure after he let a waft of air in. -
