been a long time since using the local rag and i know each area is different but fed up with yp prices and thinking of trying a paper again for a while, benefits are if its rubbish only tied in for a few weeks. do you swear by it or waste of money?

Problem with our business, it is a “Crisis Purchase”. Customer has a fault, water pouring everywhere, unlikely he/she will look in the local rag.

Saying that, I’ve just put something in for a special carnival spread, for charity. I done it though as I wanted a favour out of the editorial team for something else I’m working on.

Ditto what Alex say’s. You cannot over advertise but at some point you must rationalise the expense budget carefully and wisely. Response from adverts in the local rag come some way toward the end of the success list TBH. But it also depends on your patch too because if you live in the wilds of those Scottish highlands then the locals may depend on the local rag for any and all info. If your patch is West Bromwich then most can’t read English anyway so that won’t work for you. If it’s Welshpool you live then you are only funding the Friday night cod ‘n chips wrapper.

If you are somewhere between those 3 points then newspaper advert success is almost totally unquantifiable and you have to resort to ‘statistics’. Statistically if you place a small ad in a local rag anywhere in the UK then out of (say) 25,000 readers only .001{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} will read your ad (that’s 25 people) Of those 25 only 1{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} will phone to enquire, so is it any wonder the phone doesn’t ring based on those simple stats?

Xenophobia rules O.K. then Martin. I could understand a bit of flippancy regards Welshpool, and perhaps a tongue in cheek comment about English could be laughed off. However there are other areas of cultural balance, including I daresay some of which read these pages, and I wonder if perhaps that statement was a tad misplaced.

    Sorry lost in numbers??

I really think it is horses for courses. I used to have a weekly box, and O.K. probably didn’t make the phones ring off the wall, but served as a reminder we are still here.

I have an advert in our local weekly free paper – costs me £32.50 per month for a couple of pure lineage ads per week but it brings in about 4 jobs per week so it is worth doing for me.

Have you any idea how many calls you get from this ad funbobby? Hollytree gets about 4 which for just over an £8 spend ain’t at all bad, for sure! At that rate I may stuff an ad in the Basingstoke Gazette above Premier Electric’s “£5 off on presentation of this advert” stunt. 8)

“Get £6off on presentation of this ad”….has a certain ring to it don’t ya think? 😀

not tried it yet martin but for £30 a week would be looking for 3-4 a week or not really worth it.

Re: do you advertise in your local paper?

Stopped ad in local rag just over a year ago. That’s just over £500 saved since then. Difficult to be sure but think I may have lost about £500’s worth of business since stopping the ad.
8O, you say? Well, don’t forget, to make that saving I didn’t have to shift off my chair. And I haven’t had any of the other expenses or hassle involved with doing that £500’s worth of work. So in reality I’m getting the same money as before or more but doing less for it. And with the time saved by not doing that work which I didn’t have to do, I’ve been able to spend loads of time on here pontificating about how to run a business .

On the other hand, if I was just starting out somewhere new, I would need to get my name out there. But I’d go for leafletting, starting with my neighbours. It might not get much response but it’s very very targeted. At least if you do it yourself.
    Mike.
