Domestic Appliance Horror Stories ?

Not a horror story, just a question. I have a Samsung Side by side Fridge/Freezer with ice and water dispenser. This item was bought from a friend, who has moved away.We have not yet had it plumbed into water supply, so not making ice etc. Yesterday the yellow water filter light came on, to replace it, is this required at the moment when we are NOT making ice or dispensing water? The date on the filter is Aug. Wondered if we could leave this since it has not been used to filter water, or does it need to be replaced. I have reset it to turn light off, meantime. Hi Sunshine,

It operates on a timer that can be reset, I can’t remember how you do that but it is in the forums somewhere so a bit of searching should get you the answer.

Ya know its funny.. this has only happened ONCE that i have first handedly ( is that spelt correct? ) heard about lol..
I was called out to a hotpoint one day ( and i arrived the same day and within the hour ) poor old gent was beside himself… he had a hotpoint 3 years old.. thought he was doing the correct thing going directly to hotpoint…waited nearly 3 weeks for hes visit.. first wash after the engineer left..he rang me… when i got there it turned out that the brushes had been replaced and he was now just over 100 quid out of pocket… turned out also the engineer fitted the parts.. lid back on and thank u sir its all done… only it wasnt.. he forgot to release one of the brushes ( cant believe he hadnt given it a spin after the replacements were in situ )

This job cost me £30 as i felt so sorry for the guy i wavered my fee. 😕

i know that could and can be a easy mishap ( forgetting to simply release a carbon brush ) but at their call out charge.. i class it as a horror story! 😉

Hpt WM brushes can be a problem even if they have been released, iv’e found that they sometimes stick in the holder when inserted into the motor.
I always double check that they are free in the holder before putting them in the motor.

I’m looking to buy a new washing machine in the next couple of weeks, but from what i’ve gathered i should probably forget the hassle and just get a bucket and some soap

It`s not all doom and gloom even a year on 😉

The number of horror stories are few compared to the number of machines sold each year in the UK.

Hi my first post so be gentle.

It’s many years ago, probably 14 or 15 but i made the mistake (only once) of buying a Beko washing machine, firstly it didn’t work so called the no helpline…being an impatient blighter though i undid the cover and had a poke nose, after making the call though.
Sure enough found not one but two connectors hanging loose, popped them back on it worked.

Had to remove the cover and redisconnect the day the engineer called for obvious reasons, he poked and fiddled about with his equipment and pronounced the timer unit US, i could hardly lean over his shoulder and point out the loose wires on said timer could i?

So he comes back with a new timer and lo and behold the thing worked…for about another 3 months when the concrete weight block broke up.
I repaired that too with huge washers, cable ties and other such bodges, having by then realised i’d bought something i really shouldn’t have, but i was broke at the time and that’s the only reason i can come up with.

Anyway shortly after something else went, whether it was still in warranty i don’t know but i slung the thing away in self disgust (days before the net, so difficult to research effectively) and bought a Bosch WF1401, which still performs today as well as it did the first time i turned it on, though the on off switch cover is now loose…should i complain…;)

That experience taught me a lot, and our white goods are aforesaid Bosch washer 13/14 years, Meile Dishwasher 8 years, Leibherr larder fridge 6ish, Seimens fridge freezer at least 11, Bosch freezer in garage 12 to 13..all except the Leibherr have been trouble free, that has needed two thermostat thingy’s (the last one i fitted meself).

Just like to say, i’ve read the forums for some time and appreciate the honesty here.
I found out the hard way over the years that inferior products are just not worth the money, as and when our white goods comes to end of life they will be replaced by probably but not necessarily Meile, certainly not the cheap stuff coming from China or similar…not a fan of child labour so not doing anything to support it.

I also want to share a small incident. I have a glasswasher for my glass accessories. One day it started making horrible noises and at that time I got scared. I can’t explain that feeling to you. It was horrible.

Smeg Dishwasher bought with 5 yr warranty ,

After about 18 months the handle fell off. ok not much .
Then the Door came loose .. hmm.

Then a power switch button broke .could not switch it on :cry:.. and then it all went dowhill from there .

Got serviceman out, actually Seems Smeg only employ independent service engs. In my case a Shop from Devon, ( 50 odd miles away) So they only came over when they fancied or had others to do in the area. ( 2 weeks intervals all the time).
So 2 weeks( & many calls to smeg) after we reported the button problem
NB .I had told them exactly what the problem was and exactly what part was needed. Bloke turned up pulled it all to bits and said button broke ( :rolls: ) need to replace whole control unit 😯 … need to order the parts. went away.
2 weeks later ( & many calls to smeg) another man appears,
seems the parts had to come from italy ?.
Plugs in new module, large bang and flash from under the machine . looks again says it the wrong module 😯 😯 ..
Clears off .. more calls to smeg.
2 weeks later first bloke appears pulls it apart says looks like motor is gone , wants to report the machine as unservicable arggh!!! . clears off.
More calls to smeg, 2 weeks later diiferent mans turns up with a complete door ??. wot!! leaves door & goes away again.

After more calls to smeg I finally get them to admit the machine is a duffer and needs to be replaced. in the mean time the 2nd repairman turns up to repair it again ?. :rolls:

I get back to smeg to see what going on and after a wee chat they deny they agreed to the replacement, was a different person this time. after me exploding over the phone .. surprised I lasted this long !! .. they go back over they telcon recordings and all credit to them they admit it was promised.
So 10 days later a new machine turns up, with a wonky door..
but does work.
After the standard 2 weeks .. repair man from another company
appears and fits the door left during a previous visit.
I insisted the first company never came here again.

So about 3 months without a dishwasher. nightmare.. 👿

I even had to fight to get smeg to reinstate my 5 yr warranty on the new machine , they wanted the old warranty to run on .
But its ok at the moment .. !

i had this dish washer but it broke and in exchange i got these tips…Don’t use regular dish soap. The suds will overflow the dishwasher.
Don’t overload the dishwasher. You need to leave room for the water jets to spray onto the dishes.
Face the dirtiest part of the dishes toward the spray jets, which usually come from the center.
Don’t mix steel and silver items. Putting two different types of metal in contact in a humid environment is a perfect recipe for corrosion.
Try to keep bowls, spoons and other dishes with identical shapes separated. Otherwise, they will tend to nest together, and the water cannot reach every part of the dish.

but please can someone tell me how to fix it,..???

Is this a serious request for help?

If so may I suggest you post a question in the dishwasher forum and don’t forget to include the make, model number and brief description of fault.
