This is all good stuff! But my original point is why is the trade not promoting this to customers when you’re out on job? I mean we all get it rammed down our throats everyday about energy wastage and our carbon footprint! And now the talk of being charged for the amount of waste we generate!
So let’s look at the bottom line! Yes modern machines are crap we all know this! Yes people are not prepared to pay high repair costs! But can you not see the light at the end of the tunnel? We are now getting to situation that the cost of living for most folk is getting out of hand as we are hit by tax after tax and to go out and spend £200 quid on a new machine becomes more difficult for your everyday Joe public to do! It can only be a good thing for the trade as people are now thinking about getting machines repaired! All this trade needs is for all the manufactures to be forced to raise the cost of machines in line with inflation and to be forced to admit that their manufacturing processes and responsibilities should be to insure a long life span of a machine and to keep that machine going for as long as possible to cut down on the amount of waste that is produced by the so call through away machine!
And as such we all have a responsibility of informing customers and manufactures that the figures for domestic appliances being scrapped and the amount of waste generated in this country by the so called through away machines is quite staggering! We as a trade need to take action to save the trade from the trade! And use every tool at our disposal

Interesting thread, but no one has mentioned the Government both British and European. They are now on the “environmental” bandwagon BUT in reality they are only doing lip service to the problem. Why.
Firstly the manufacturing of appliances creates massive income for them VAT etc.
Secondly the workforce of whichever country is doing the manufacturing is in employment, again paying taxes.
They are quite happy to continue collecting revenue.
If machines were to be made to the reliable standard that they were not to many years ago and not the “under engineered” crap that is being presented to the public today then all would be hunky-dory, BUT this is not go in to happen in the short term.
I am afraid that the damage has been done with the public mentality, it will take a long time to convince them that appliances need to be made to last longer than two to three years that they currently believe. Engineers and businesses, both “company and individuals” should influence them that something should be done, instead of “bolstering” the idea of a chuck away society. Unfortunately Joe public think they are doing their bit for re-cycling by collecting a few plastic bags and their empty wine bottles :rolls: . IT isn’t enough.
Until the governments the public and us do something about this it will continue to be a problem. How about writing to your MP? Just address your letter to him/her at the House of Commons. Next time one of your customers complains, ask them why don’t they do something about it, and suggest the MP route. Finally the crap that was written about independent call/repair charges creating the problem is totally rubbish, and should be ignored, we all know they reasons why things are staring to go “pear shaped” in this industry, our charges are considerably less than the manufactures.
