I have a John Lewis washing machine. When I close the door and select a cycle the door locking mechanism clicks three times as it attempts to lock the door but fails, so the door never locks and the cycle cannot be started. The only way around this is to switch it to the first program from the off position and press the start button before the door lock mechanism does its thing. Using this little workaround the cycle begins, however at some point after that the RCD circuit breaker trips mid cycle leaving me with a machine full of water and clothes. Frustrating! Any idea what is going on? Model number is JLBMWI1402.

Hi. Hazzard a guess that your model should be JLBIWM1402 because what you have written does not exist.
Your problem is most likely the wash element / the heater as I have had this before ( many times!! ). What actually happens is that the element is increasingly creeping to an earth fault which 1) can cause the machines door lock to mess about as described and 2) after the heater has heated up the water somewhat the increase to earth takes out the trip in the house. If you disconnect the heater to try but note that you might get a error code crop up because the machine will detect something is amiss/disconnected but it would prove the point with the door lock starting problem. Also note that if your machine`s motor is fitted with brushes and they are almost worn out and sparking that can cause the same problem but in your case the heater is the most likely culprit. Note it you ever contact the site with a J lewis Electrolux or Zanussi you have to give us the product number, begins with 91?????/??

Ok thanks for the information andyjawa! Product number is 914528216/04. Shall work out how to disconnect the heater but if you can provide some information that would be super.

Sorry been away. The heater is at 6 o/clock at the rear of the machine behind the rear elongated oval plastic back panel held on with 7mm self tapping screws. Power off before doing anything!!!
