The door seal on my washing machine over the past 2 years from new has a horrible black gunge coating it, that is very difficult if not impossible to remove, should I replace it or is there something that will dissolve this stuff,

Unfortunately once the seal is gunged up replacement is the only option. To prevent it happening on the new seal, this article may help.
You can order a replacement direct from our shop@ or mail an enquiry to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk quoting the make and model no.
