Another question from me. I can’t decide whether to have a double or single (built-in) oven. We’ve had an ancient freestanding gas cooker for years, which was fine, but would a built-in single give the same capacity? And what about those combi-ovens you can get as the top oven if you have a double – are they any good? Thanks.

    Re: Double or single oven?

Combi ovens I am not a fan of.

    Microwave ovens do their thing.

    Normal ovens do their thing.

Trying to put the two together often means that the microwave side works okay but the oven is flawed in comparison to a proper conventional oven.

TBH whether you go down the double or single oven route depends on what the requirements are.

If you cook a lot or entertain, then a double oven makes a whole heap of sense. If you just use it for normal day to day cooking then a single oven is usually adequate, especially a decent oven.

There are a lot of advantages to a double oven however.

Capacities vary depending on the space you have and how deep your wallet is. 😉

Thank you, K. That sounds like excellent advice.

What do you think about this Hotpoint Openspace affair, where you get a ‘divider’ to convert your single into a double oven? It sounds like a good idea, but might it be a gimmick? Plus is Hotpoint any good?

    Re: Double or single oven?

    No problem.

There’s a few of these “make one oven into two” things floating about now, IIRC Samsung do one as well. I remain unconvinced by the notion for two reasons, I don’t think that you can accurately control the temperature in each compartment without sufficient insulation between them to isolate them from one another. And, you get half the space, roughly.

On the last point, it’s find if you want to cook say, a pizza at 200ËšC in one bit and a chocolate pudding in the other at 150ËšC so long as the heat doesn’t bleed through from one to tother. But, if you want to cook a chicken or, a joint of meat that’s high or use a casserole dish in one, I’d lay odds you’d struggle with some large joints and cookware along those lines.

I’d have a good look at the oven before buying and know exactly what you need and what it can do. (Still dubious on the whole temperature thing though)

As for Hotpoint, which is really Indesit… get one very long bargepole and make sure you stay that far away from it and you’ll be fine. 😉

    Thanks, K.

I’ve just ordered a very long bargepole from an internet site and will put it to good use.

A decent double oven seems to be the best option, then. Many thanks!

    Re: Double or single oven?

or if you want much better capacity go for matching singles – one, over the other (space allowing)

and IF you can get a *graded* hotpoint oven, they dont need bargepoles as they are fair value for money, unlike their *perfect* priced brethren
