ParticipantI am attemting the change the bearings on my washing machine, its a bigger job than i realised. I have stripped the machine down and managed to get the drum out of the machine.
Has anyone any tips how to get the bearings out ? ❓ ❓
I am going to add a link on here to show you pictures of the back of the drum where it shows the bearings, which bit do i knock to get the bearings out?
Any tips or advice much appreciated, thanks

Re-fit pulley bolt. Use a big hammer to drive shaft through drum. Use said large hammer and a drift (Steel bar) to knock the old bearings out.
I would advise hand and eye protection whilst doing this as a considerable amount of force is required.

You have to get the drum out first
sometimes they just pull out sometimes they need more force but be careful not to damage the drum shaftNovember 22, 2009 at 1:14 pm #304436garn

Anyone noticed just how clean the back of the outer drum is, never seen one like that with failed bearings. ❓
Although there are some nasty dents in the rear bearing where someone has been clattering it. :rolls:

I still need to get the other half of the plastic casing off to get access to the bearings fully, also do i need to buy a back half of the plastic drum or can i just buy a bearing kit for this job ? This is the first time i have attepted this job

As Penguin said screw the pulley bolt back in and hit it hard. This will allow you to remove the plastic drum from the metal inner drum. You then have access to the bearings.

When knocking the bearings out use the drift in the 12, 3,6 and nine o’clock position as this will help to ease them out.You don’t have to buy a rear drum assembly you can just get a set of bearings.Totally up to you but it would be EASIER to get a new rear drum assembly. As Penguin advised eye protection is a must.

Ok ive fitted the pulley bolt and hammered the pulley bolt with a club hammer [see pic ] and metal drift and only moved it maybe an inch so its now flush with the bearings. Have absolutly wacked it to move it the small amount that i have. So much that ive bent the bolt slightly.Would i have been better off trying to dislodge the bearings first ? I am also hammering the shaft, side on, because if i put the drum face down and wack it i might damage the drum metal. ❓
any tips for removal ? pic below of ‘progress’ made, without the bolt in place !

Your Going To Have To prop The Outer Drum on The floor With 3 Heavy Timbers or a Couple of bricks or use A Black And Decker Workbench Floor Is Better Your going To Have give This A good Swipe Several Times With A Hammer.
First Of All Prop The Outer Drum So That The Steel Inner Is Clear Beware There Are Three Locating Tabs On The Outer Drum Keep The Props Clear of Them.At This Stage If You Can Get Someone To Hold The Drum With You.
if You Have Access To Something Larger Longer Than The Extension bar Old Car jacking bar Or heavy Tube So that Your Hands Are Clear From The Strike Point
It Will be Better To get Someone To Hold The Drum At This Stage
hammer The Drum Spider At About 5 Shots At A Time In A Continuous Momentum With a Lot Of force.
once Its Released send A Couple Of Pics Of The Drum Spider where The Belt Pulley Shaft at The End of The Spider.
