Drum noise on spin –

My Hoover 1300 special edition started to make noises on the fast spin cycle – there was a kitchen rug in the machine at the time (I didn’t do it I hasten to add)

At first it looked as if the drum was running off centre from the door seal. Further investigation found that the drum has left/right play. The fault seems to go if the drum is centred – but can return. My worst fears is that it’s the ❓ ………..No someone confirm it before I say it.

At the moment it going smoothly through the wash cycle – no noises

It is probably either collapsed drum bearings or a broken drum support spider. In other words, a major repair and you need to decide if it’s worth repairing or buy new.

Sounds like Rolf Harris with his wobble board at the moment

My worst fear confirmed the bearing

Your right I need to decide if to repair – 7 years old, but been pleased with it so far – quiet and relaible

Is there a forum that gives advice on a replacment machine –

My spec is
good reliable brand
not many programmes with half load capability
simpler the better – less room for failures

Any other attribute I should consider?

Any idea how much if I did it myself? and any links to the procedure. After all I can’t make things any worse, can I?

Drum and shaft as an assembly – about £95 – p/no 97910285. spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get you one promptly if you wished to go ahead.

This job will take a repairer the best part of two hours. The entire tub assembly needs to be removed from the machine and split, so the cabinet needs to be stripped as well.

Labour rates vary widely across the UK – up ‘ere in’t north, you’d be looking at £75 from me – £45 for the first hour and £30 for the second. Dahn Saaf you can probably add on half as much again.

If you do do this yourself, take pics and make diagrams……

It may be that only the bearings have gone, in which case the bearing/seal kit is probably less than £20……if the drum-support is broken, you’ll probably have to strip it out in order to confirm that. A new drum/support assy. + seal/bearings would be a bit expensive, but you’d wind up with something FAR better than the budget ~£200 throwaway non-repairable machines. For something of reasonable quality it has to be the Bosch as posted by Helo75, or maybe consider the ISE…It’s distributed ,installed and serviced by independent engineers and specified by them to give the best service-life for the price and be easy and cheap to repair. see links on the side of the page 🙂

There’s really no need cockney, the evidence has already been established that it’s definitely broken without looking.:wink:

First thanks for taking the time to reply to my query. 😀

From what I read on the tips page regarding stripping down a Hoover, it’s a real pain of a job and if its going to cost me a lot of time (and a few choice words 😡 ) and a hefty slug of cash if it’s the spider (would also do the bearing at the same time) maybe the end of the road has come for the machine. Although this pains me – I hate the waste of equipment, but maybe it’s the most cost effective option is to get rid ➡ .

The old girl wants me to get someone in to give a quote for the work – since the spider seems to be the most expense is it reasonable him/her be able to pronounce on it before stripping it down – don’t want any nasty surprises half way through the job 😯 .

With respect to a replacement, I looked through the other forum, and as usual with electrical goods lots of different pinions and experiences. Bosch seems to figure quite a lot and ISE is always mentioned. So its one of those. If others have a view point 💡 please feel free to advise or argue.

The first machine we had was an Ariston – and in the words of the advert it went on and on. I think in all it was 14 years -couple of visits from the man to stop it over filling and me putting a new belt on. Changed it when we moved to the new house. If I could find a machine as reliable and simple as that I’d be chuffed 😀 😀 😀 .

A quick ‘n dirty check 😉

open the door, try wobbling the inner-drum around…..if it wobbles off-centre to the porthole EVENLY and revolves “evenly”, – It’s likely to be bearings……especially if it rumbles when being revolved.

the Spider is normally bolted to the drum edges at the same position as the lifter-bars (agitators) when you pull the drum off-centre and it STAYS that way, revolves eccentrically and scrapes when the off-centre bit passes the lowest point (scrapes the heater!)…..almost certainly the spider…..crunching noises when you pull it around, off centre,would suggest the broken ends rubbing together. you can even work out which leg(s) are broken.

Don’t discount the possibility that a small independent shop might break one and sell you a used part cheap. those sort of placesare going fast and should be supported!

Also worth wobbling the drum and observing the rear pulley. If the drum wobbles but the pulley doesn’t you know the spider has failed.
