Do I win the prize for the worst corroded drum support?

This machine was in use up to the day the drum support fell to pieces!

Hotpoint wm83, three and a half years old, one wash per fortnight, using Marks&Spencer liquid detergent and quick wash.

Oh, by the way, The lady is stone deaf!!

I’ve seen a few like this. Would you have any objections if I copy the photo and possibly put it up on my site as a warning to customers?

Any chance you still have that and the bits of corrosion? If so we know a detergent company who might like to see it.

    Let me know

Seen several like that round here, the water is very soft. Aldi’s own brand liquid seems very good a rotting them.

I am still changing two or three a week, can let you have the next one Kevin if Bob has tried to recycle that one. 😆

    Sorry Kev, it’s long gone!

As Jim said, I am sure there are many more like this out there.

Andy, feel free to steal the photo.

Cheers – it’s not stealing if I have permission though 😉

    Jim,

we are working closley with the chemists who develop the detergent and they are currently delving into corrosion.
Kwatt and I are already advising them to a large extent and UKW has supplied various components for them to test in their labs.
Are you able to store 4 of these example for us? If so I’ll come over when you have 4 and pick them up from you. Can’t pay you, but can supply enough powder/ dish detergent to last quite a while.

    What you think?

To give an idea as to the size of the problem, it might be worth a poll to see how many drum supports are being changed for this problem. I am currently changing 5 to 10 hotpoint drum supports per month.

Nice little earner though, so do we really want to stop it? 😉

And it might be interesting to relate it to water hardness.

The chemists take it a lot further than water hardness…..which makes it extremely interesting.

Now you’ve given me an idea!

More when I’ve spoken to Robin Hood (kwatt who’s buried deep in Centre Parcs)

One of my customers was getting me to fit a new spider on his 95 series every 2 years or so. Last time he suggested varnishing the new one before installation 💡 . He did it himself while I was getting the old one out. He used some Ronseal wood varnish which was all he had in his shed at the time. Seems like some time ago this happened; more than 2 years I reckon. Water’s very soft here.

Re: Drum support failure… Do I win a prize?

My theory is that it is due to the three ‘L’s: Low temperature, Low usage and Liquid detergent.

The mould and bacteria that accumulates in machines that are used in this senario, grows in the crystaline structure of the aluminium alloy and attracts the alkaline chemicals in the detergent. Subsequently the alkaline starts to break down the alloy.

That’s what I tell my customers anyway.

Right or wrong, it gives the customer something to think about. I rarely get a repeat call for bacteria growth and corrosion when I have told the customer about the “three L’s”

If they’re the sort of customer with a personalised registration on the drive it’s best to get your Dremel out and give Nature a helping hand 😉 .

The powder would always be welcome for the washer, need to buy a dishwasher first for the other.
I have done two already this week. Will save the next 3 or 4 and make some arrangements. I assume you would also like some info on the types of detergents and general usage in each case.

I have to agree with Bob on at least two points, low temp and, overdosing, particularly with liquids., but low usage is not a factor in this area. The last two machines I have just done are both well used, 6 to 8 loads a week machines.

    Jim.
