I’ve had my Hotpoint VTD65 (venting) for about 10 years. Just recently I found it wasn’t drying, and it was because there was no heating. I use programme ‘3’ which is a general hot tumble but no heat in this case. I checked the manual and switched to programme ’30 minutes’ which has an option to choose high or low heat, and both of those heat as normally.

I checked the fluff tray and it’s clear, and the venting pipe had a bit of fluff but mostly clear. I’ve gone back and forth a few times and it seems consistent that ‘3’ runs cold and ‘30 minutes’ runs hot.

So what sort of failure would cause one programme to fail to heat and the other not? Is there any sort of sensor only used by some settings? Does the ‘30 minutes’ one heat regardless and the ‘3’ one only heat to a target temperature (sounds dangerous combination)?

Any advice welcome. In particular, will it be useful to get an engineer out to it (probably someone local, not official Hotpoint, it’s well out of warranty).

    Thanks,
    Oli

An electronically controlled dryer will only heat on the ‘auto’ settings if there are damp clothes in the drum.

There is a small copper brush that should run on the top of the drum, if this is broken or adrift it will not heat on the auto settings.
