I have a GE Tumble Dryer Model No. DISQ493DT.

Went to get my stuff out the dryer yesterday only to find still it damp. Went to restart it, pressed the start button – it whirrs briefly as though it’s going to go, then immediately stops.

It had obviously cut out mid way through the cycle as it was still ‘ticking down’.

Hopefully it’s something as simple as a belt, but I’m not usually that lucky! It’s one of those large American jobs.

Any ideas? Just need an idea of what I’m in for before I call the repair guy.

    Many thanks,

    Sharon

could be that you have a blocked filter ,or even a buildup of fluff, somewhere that is restricting airflow
that would cause a safety-stat to trip.

sorry, I can’t be more helpful, I’m not familiar with your machine.

If you are going to open it and have a look-see, PLUG OUT!

Our American colleagues over on ApplianceJunk.com reckon it’s the motor.

    Thanks guys.

Fluff build-up, yeah that would be nice, sounds cheap! The flipside, a new motor, sounds expensive. Any ideas of costs if it does turn out to be the motor?

The “whirrs briefly” intrigues me…..any drum-movement with this?

    “briefly”-please define….1 second? 10? 2 minutes?

It’s possible that it’s capacitor -start which is OK, but the run-windings are u/s.

It’s also possible that the “whirr” is a completely different thing (timer or separate fan-motor)

    Don’t place too much credence on what I say, as, unlike P45, I don’t do this for a living-therefore, I’m a “keen tinkerer” 😛

A new motor is likely to be expensive , rewinding is usually uneconomic.

    (guessing £70 to £200- vague, I know)

A methodical investigation is the only way forward.

If you are not happy to UNPLUG and investigate, see the “find an engineer function” below.

A multimeter is needed, a cheap and cheerful one can be had for under £10, but is no earthly use if you don’t understand how to use it!

Sorry for the vagueness and negativity………the more detailed the description of what’s happening, the more accurately the problem is likely to be pinpointed.

    Thanks Cockey Steve,

The “whirrs briefly” intrigues me…..any drum-movement with this?

    “briefly”-please define….1 second? 10? 2 minutes?

Sorry, been a bit too vague. When I say ‘whirrs’ it’s the usual noise it make as it starts. No drum movement. How brief? Just the one second.

Hopefully these details will enable you to make a nice cheap diagnosis – if only!!!

Thanks again, would appreciate your, and anybody elses thoughts.

Just wanted to say thanks. From your response above, I followed up your lead with the guy on ApplianceJunk.com. As he was more familiar with my machine, coming from the same side of the pond, I gave him a few more details, now he seems to think it’s just a broken belt.

Really helpful, numbers, diagrams and everything. Without you, wouldn’t have found him.

    Thanks again,

    Sharon
