KeymasterGuys.
We have an upright Dyson DC08 vacuum cleaner, about 5 years old.
There are no problems with it other than in the last few months, the washable pre filter, needs washing about one per week, otherwise, the vac stops picking up. There seems to be a heck of a lot of dust/fluff making it to the filter.
Nothing has changed in the houshold.. no pets etc
Any ideas ?January 10, 2010 at 5:37 pm #308398kladave

Hi
You may have a fault with the cyclone unit.

Do you really mean an upright DC07? The DC08 is a cylinder machine.
Anyway, the upright DC07 had problems with clogging of the small cyclones. The dust was supposed to drop down the centre tube of the bin – but it doesn’t. Instead, the fine dust builds up in the top of the cyclone assembly, renderring the small cyclones useless.
You could try using another vacuum cleaner to suck the dirt out of the inner tube of the Dyson bin, along with some knocking against a solid surface. DO NOT use water, as the dirt may form sticky mud, and the cyclones are not easily taken apart on this model (thermosetting glue was used to assemble parts of the cyclone assembly).
It was a silly design – the cyclone design was improved for the DC14, making it easier to clean.

Sorry.. a slight typo.. it is in fact a DC07.
I initailly tried giving the cyclone section a good shake rattle and roll in the bin..I’ll get my car vac on it and try this..failing that, what’s the next options.. considering it’s a sealed unit ?
buy another cyclone ??
dump the vac for a new one ??You say not to try and wash it out.. but as a last resort.. what about an over night soak.. is there anything inside the cyclone that could be damaged by soaking ??
It’s not much use as it is, having to wash the filer out every week, so we have very little to lose !!

Ok regardless of model it is still the cyclone, if you end up unblocking the cyclone it will only block up again.
Buy a new cyclone it will be modified.PS
Try not to wash it but if you decide to leave to dry in a hot room for at least 1 week,if you don’t dry out enough any moisture left will be sucked straight through the motor!!

Under close inspection, I’ve found that the trap door, on the collection housing, is cracked in a number of places.
I guess this isn’t helping any ??
Secondly, the rubber seal that fits on the lower part of the cyclone, and seals the cyclone to the trapdoor, is intact, and looks OK.
But when I conect the cylcone to the flap. (not in situ), it does seem a little loose.. as if the seal has stretched.
If this seal has gone, would this allow dust up the inside centre section of the cyclone, and if so, could this also be part of my problem ?
In the short term, I’ve duck taped the cracks over until we decide whether to fix or replace.
I’ve found the cost of the trap door, unfortunately, not on this site.
Is the seal called “Fine Dust Collector Seal”January 21, 2010 at 10:23 pm #308403gandh1

nah cos the suction pulls the cyclone in.
popular myth those cyclones cannot be unassembled but ive always thought , if it aint glued itll come apart, and they will.
i did come across a tutorial online a few months ago that showed how to unasseble a trapdoor cyclone, where the pin was internally located. never saved the link tho! sorry 🙁
