ParticipantHello,
Picked up one of these machines with a damaged tub. Previous lady grossly overloaded it and knocked a balancing weight off the tub. I’ve repaired this and the machine now works great, except……the dyson engineers have frigged/bodged/”upgraded” (read as you deem appropriate) the machine to disable it’s flagship contra-rotation feature. Now both drums spin the same direction, even during the wash part of the cycle…
I would like to undo this “upgrade” to restore the original wash functionality. (provided that you don’t grossly overload the machine/live in a hard water area they tend to work ok)
Dyson email support say “not possible”Dyson telephone support were very confused when a condemned/written off machine was working fine, and said that they’d try to find an answer to the contra-rotation question but made no promises.
Google finds very little info on these machines.
Anybody any idea what dyson did?I can tell you that it is NOT a hardware change to the drums, in the sense that the drums/gearbox/gearchange work just fine when actuated manually – they’re not at all “locked” physically.
It could be a control module change (which one?) or they could have re-programmed it/stuck the machine in some kind of diagnostic/limited functionality mode – I’ve no idea yet but would like to undo the change.
Anybody in the know?
Thanks,—

not got a lot of info but my thought are the following
had a few of these machines where the innner drum spider corroded causing the inside drum to come forward and jam. from what i understand dysons answer was to change software to stop contra-rotation
unless anyone else knows different
to put things into perpective. these machines do not conta-rotate during the whole wash cycle. it is a 30sec or so action every so often. so over 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time the drum turns as one

Aaargh, this forum logs you out it you type a reply then make a cuppa…
Yes, aluminium alloy on the water side wasn’t clever. The corrosion also grinds the main drum bearing seal to pieces.Contra rotation is only during the wash part of the cycle. Make clothes dance, pause, dance, pause, dance, pause. Not much timewise but important functionally.
Dyson fixed them until the warranties ran out, then quickly stopped making the parts and started to frig them at the next service and advise the customer run them into the ground.
The lady did ring back this morning but wasn’t able to help. First she was adamant that it was technically impossible to restore the feature, and wasn’t as polite as she could be when told otherwise. Later she admitted that it was now protocol to frig the machines when serviced, and that they were not willing (not that they were not able) to un-frig them or tell you how they were frigged in the first place. Which is fair enough. It’s a little cheeky to try to sell a service for $99 and advertise it as a one year warranty though, where it won’t cover the parts that break. :rolls:
I’ll keep my eye out for a cheap machine without full service history and examine the control goodies.October 2, 2012 at 10:53 am #382205electrofix

what you are after is a timer with the original software.
I had a customer scrap the machine because of the work involved in freeing the inner drum so there are lots still around
look for a faulty one with F1 fault, drum overload, which normally means the inner drums are siezed
would look on ebay and see what turns up

Thanks Dave 🙂
Is the “timer unit” the upper circuit board (control panel) or the lower one (motor/gearbox drive)?
