Hi LMCC67,
The correct terminology is vaccum cleaner, Hoover is a brand name that is simply synonomous with vaccuming a carpet. Not your fault at all, just a popular misconception as vaccuming has often been reffered to as “hoovering the carpet” which Hoover just love.
In any bagless cleaner the filters are absolutely critical to its operation, if they are dirty or blocked in any way whatsoever the performance will drop as a result. Sadly, in the case of many Dyson products this becomes all too apparent as the filters clog up and, in my experience, this leads to a drop in performance. I have also seen this cause motor failures and all sorts of other woes.
First thing to do is check the filters, make sure they’re clear and clean, if not then replace them, even the so-called “lifetime” filters as they do clog from what I see.
The other thing to be checking is the that the brush roll is clear and turning, not blocked with hair or other detrious material and that the belt is in place and correct. If the brush roll is blocked then the performance will be severely compromised.
Other than that it’s over to the vac guys to offer other tips.

thank you for your terminology correction, never thought of that!!!! just thought “vacuming” was an American term as i work for an American and he uses that term!!!!!!
thank you also for your advice on my vaccum, i have just checked filters they seem pretty clean, checked the brush roll seems clear but doesnt spin when vaccum is on!!! maybe the belt?August 29, 2005 at 12:01 am #146079kwatt

It depends what colour the Dyson is.
The silver/Lime one (slime) is a clutchless model which is prone to belts snapping. It’s easily acessible with a 2p coin.
The silver/yellow one has a clutch. The brushroll will only rotate, once the head has been lowered. But on this model, I get that complaint alot when people have accidently disengaged the clutch.
