Our Dyson DC04 lacks the pick-up power it once had. It’s made a loud noise for some time, so today I had a close look, whilst I checked the filters and the removable bits for blockages etc etc. it turns out that the dust collection container/ filter housing doesn’t sit firmly against two rubber gaskets and therefore looses the suction. If the dust bin is pushed backwards slightly the it seals and the escaping suction is sealed. My question to you expert chaps is…….do these seals/gaskets wear and loose their effectiveness OR is it the actual plastic construction of the machine has worn with time and and the clip cannot hold the dust container firmly enough against the seals to be effective.

Take the seals off and give them a wash in warm soapy water, then replace, also check that the removable blockage filter on the right hand side of machine near the bottom sits properly when the handle is pulled back.
Loss of suction on these is usually down the that part popping out sligtly…
If after all these checks it still lacks suction.
I suggest submerging the bin in a bath or suitable container and shaking vigourously.,, then flush out till water is clear, and leave to air dry for at least 24 hours before re fitting…
    Hope this helps

I should have said the actual cylconic unit and not the bin!

All the removable bits are clean and sat correctly in place. Im farily sure that the problem lies with the seals of the fact that its worn on the bin/cyclonic unit to upright catch, as the noise (loud air escape) goes when the assembly is pushed back into the seals, or the seals are worn. I will wash as per your advice, Thanks for replying!

With the bin removed, pit your hand over the top rubber seal and feel if there is good suction there, if you hear the air release valve operate then its definately a blocked cyclone uni. ( air valve is located above you rubber seal in pic no 1. Its basically a spring loaded valve that releases when there is a blockage…

sorry to be a numpty but when you say top rubber seal with the bin removed, which rubber seal, also the cleaner seems to pickup better when in a leeser angle to the sweeping unit, ie the more it bends back the less the suction, as far as I can see all pipes and clip in plastics are installed correctly. THANKS AGAIN!!

The holes which the rubber seals are on, one if them provides the suction from the motor which then locates via the seal to the bin,so just pit your hand over one at a time you will soon know which is the suction..as it will suck your hand on to it!

The duct leading to the motor is the one on the right (as you face the front of your DC04). Your machine is probably at least ten years old now, so as the seals age and dry out they tend to lose their elasticity and allow air leakage. Lubricate them with something non-oil based.
If the attachment clip at the top is not holding the cyclone assembly in place properly then it should be obvious.
Best way to clean the cyclone unit is to remove the cyclone lid and then jet wash it. Or at least flush it under running water. But if you do this, give it at least 24 hours to dry out-any water remaining in it will kill your motor.
Also change the post motor filter while you are doing the above-the bottom filter is invariably overlooked and clogged with carbon after a few years.
Also check the changeover valve for blockages.
