KeymasterWe have been suffering with a Hotpoint DWF70P.
We are long time dishwasher users (more than 35 years) and our problem with this model is that it simply fails to wash the dishes. It does remove food residues effectively but then it deposits a form of sand on the crockery and bakes it on. This happens whether we use small or large quantities of powder and we attend to its needs for salt and finishing fluid like tending to the needs of a newborn.
Hotpoint Merloni technicians have come a number of times. They decided that the first machine should be replaced. The new machine both ripped a new floor covering and then filled the kitchen with water because installation had failed to include a washer at the cold water supply inlet.
The slow influx of water led to a smelly kitchen and when the problem was diagnosed (by a flooring fitter!) the kitchen floor had to be removed. The resulting dirty, hard to clean and dangerous kitchen floor is causing considerable distress in a certain lady of my acquaintance. Is it possible for anyone to offer advice on the most effective means of dealing with Hotpoint Merloni?
The service calls take ages to make and, often, produce no useful outcome.
The technician visits require time away from my day job.
The incompetence produces damage and distress.
Obeying the Hotpoint Merloni complaints procedure instruction of writing to them makes things worse.
1. The complaints department will not acknowledge receipt of our letters (we know they have received them). 3 letters sent more than a month ago remain unacknowledged and not reported on their system. The claim letter was sent only 5 days ago.
2. The service call phone lines cannot speak about matters being dealt with by complaints.Unscientific research to identify other owners of DWF70P’s has shown that 3 out of 7 are not satisfied with the effectiveness of their machine. Research stopped on grounds that only a really sad person asks strangers if they own a DWF70P. 🙁 But maybe you have to be sadder to know that you do!! Unless it is such an annoying thing in your life. 😉
All advice and guidance will be gratefully received.

According to what I’ve seen and, I’ve seen a few, this is indicative of residue not being rinsed off properly and baked on when the appliance goes onto a drying cycle. The residues break down to some extent during the wash process and the tiny bits get re-deposited onto the dishes etc., this indicates that it is not being rinsed off properly. 99.99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time this is due to the loading pattern used or the lack of, or poor quality rinse aid and not actually a fault with the appliance.
That said, anything is possible but I’ve never really seen anything else causing the fault in probably hundreds of instances.
What powder and rinse aid are you using?

You’re on your own there I’m afraid. 😉

IMO dealing with most companies complaits departments can be a daunting challenge for most of us. If however you have a genuine complaint about their product and service given to it and can fully document the catalogue of errors and damage caused by their organisation. Then your local CAB or Trading Standards Office could act on your behalf and lend weight to your case 😉
Getting back to the problem machine more specifically, I suspect the problem is (or was) a restriction in the flow from the main circulating pump to the top spray arm. Gritty deposits on crockery will almost certainly only be found on those items taken from the top basket 🙂

Thank you both for your responses.
The grit is not due to food residues. We have been so silly (by way of experiment) to use the machine to wash clean crockery and glass and that became gritty in the same way. Both trays become gritty. It is easier to see on glassware but it is present on everything except metal objects. Among other reasons offered by Hotpoint is ‘your crockery is too big for an Italian dishwasher – Italian crockery is smaller.’ My Italian daughter in law just laughed.
I will try local Trading Standards
Once more – Thank you

KeymasterThere is always going to be some residue in the appliance and, even then there’s nothing that can leave a deposit in it in the first place so it can only be caused by an external source. The only thing I can think of is the breakdown of the water softner, but that would give a different result.
However, the crockery thing is a joke, surely?

Emm, It really sounds to me as though food stuff has got into the system. Check the spray arms for blockages. I get these deposits all the time because my kids are too lazy to clean the food off their plates before putting them in the dishwasher. I’d prefer it if they actually rinsed them first, but there’s no telling kids.
Anyway, gotta go now, go the dishwasher to clean out again because we’re getting the “sandy” deposits again.

its a build up of dirt and stuff in the base of the machine under the filters, remove filters, clean out grit from base clean filters and spray arms, stick on a rinse a couple of times, then put a dishwasher cleaner through it ,with certain dishwashers this common, you need to make sure you rinse plates and make sure salt is always topped up hope this is of help smartin

To be honest boys and girls the “sand ” residue sounds much more like starch molecules left on the plates.
To overcome this aggravating problem ,DO NOT pre rinse your pots as this affixes the business end of the molecules to your plates
also increase the dosage of detergent and, remove any large plates from the area direcly infront of the dispenser .

I have to agree with ex-employee on this one. Although having a draining problem will also cause this problem eg: extended waste hose or poorly installed machine. It is extremely doubtful there is anything wrong with your appliance.
