    Hi,

I have recently inherited the above washing machine which is in generally good nick but does have a couple of issues – I’m hoping someone can help?

Firstly, the door seal is covered with black mould which I thought suggested that the machine was not heating up to the correct temperature. Having checked the outflow today after a 40 degree wash, the water was definitely colder than it should be, so this seems to be a problem. The machine goes through its cycle without a pause to heat the water, so does this suggest the thermostat? If so, where can I find this, and is it a reasonably straightforward replacement?

Secondly, the drum appears to struggle a little when there is a large load. Is this likely to be the capacitor, and if so, can I replace it with another of the same size, or does it have to be a specific ‘Electra’ spare?

Thirdly, I have no manual for this machine. I know that it is made by ‘Merloni’ in Italy, but does anyone know if it is the same as a Hotpoint, Hoover etc. model?

Thank you in advance for any help!!

    Charlie

Door seal is HERE. This ARTICLE will help you in the future.

Heating element when metered (with the plug out) should read 20-25 ohms when the wires are removed. Replacement can be found HERE if required. It’s a bit of octopuss wrestling to get the old one out but basically straightforward.

Motor labouring is often a capacitor issue. Check the “uF” rating on the one you’ve got, then choose from HERE. It’s the 20 uf one from memory but check first.

Electra was the old Electricity Board brand name. They’ve been gone for some years now, so a manual will be unobtainable through any official channels.

Power off if you intend to work on the machine yourself.

    Hi Penguin,

Thanks for your detailed reply. When I meter the heating element, I get an infinity reading so I guess I’ll need to replace this. Is this likely to be all that’s wrong or do you think the thermostat must also be at fault? If so, is there an easy way to test this?

    Thanks for your help

    Hi Mike,

I believe the serial number is 984028258. I think the machine was built in 1998 (various labels and stickers on the machine seem to confirm this).

    Thanks for your help

Heater should read 20-25 ohms, so yours is knackered.

    Hi Penguin,

Have now replaced the heater as per your advice and the machine is now heating up properly and works like new!

    Thanks for all your help
