Electra (Creda) 37469 …1989 vintage, has been fantastic I’ve only replaced the heater thermostat in all that time and listened to it squeek slightly (but on economy 7 I don’t hear it much!)
I took the dry clothes out last weekend but they smelt slightly ‘electrical component hot’. I test cycled it with nothing in and found it heating but the drum wasn’t rotating. Took it apart tonight, removed the bottom plate that exposes the motor & belt pulley wheels. The belt is intact and in good condition. With the in-line power connector to the motor disconnected and the machine set to cycle, I used my DVM (1 leg to chassis ground) to identify 240 Volts on two of the four pins and other voltages (20 ish ? – but not mains volts) on the other two. Is the motor dead? – how can I tell? and if so how can I get it out to replace it? – looks like its cage is rivetted to the botom plate. I can replace the motor for about £40 and am keen to save an otherwise perfectly good machine from the scrapheap it! (and can I remove the squeek at the same time?) 😕

Absolutely no need to live test. You should test the motor for continuity and resistance.

Motor is held onto the cage by two very hard to remove and even harder to refit clamps.

I assume you are talking of using a second hand motor at that price.

A word of caution, there are two different, non interchangeable motors fitted to this machine.
Is the belt a three rib belt or a five rib belt?

The squeak is either the jockey pulley/pulleys or the copper earthing strap that sits on the end of the drum shaft at the back in most cases.

Hi Iadom, Its a 3 rib belt. I’ll have to test the motor tomorrow night with equipment from work. Looking at it at the moment, removing the pulley wheel holder, drilling out the 4 (or all 8) rivets on the cage nearest the ‘access’ hole (pulley side) and re-riveting afterwards looks easiest?
motor? If you can recommend a reputable source (Whitegoods search didn’t show one?), or if think I’d be better taking the existing one down to my local motor repair centre (one in town) I’m prepared to take advice, but new (? – I’ll check) on http://www.yourspares.co.uk/parts/creda … TR162.aspx

Re: Electra (Creda) Sensair drum not rotating

Having a three rib belt means that this motor is a relay start motor, not the later capacitor run motor.

A sticking, failing relay could have caused the motor to fail.

Speaking from well over 40 years experience I would never replace a relay start motor without fitting a new relay at the same time.

Sadly the relay for this machine has been obsolete for many years now.

Strangely enough the old type motor is still listed as available but the later one is not. Chances are if you tried to order one it would also come up as obsolete.

Part number is C00208767, out of stock at the few suppliers I checked. 🙁

I’m sincerely grateful for your input, looks like this is effectively E.o.L then, pity 🙁
So the next question is what do I replace it with? I’d like a vented machine, long life (!) & prepared to pay a bit more for a half decent one, thoughts? Bosch wta74200?
NB: I have a ISE10 (1606) washing machine (2 years old, works well, OK so far) but they only seem to do a condenser dryer machine now. My first Electra W/M lasted circa 11 years & two children, AEG Lavomat ~9 years (& motor death).

Zanussi dryers are not bad, Bosch decent as well.

White Knight vented a good budget option.
