KeymasterElectrolux dishwasher, type ESI602. Shortly after we bought it 4 years ago, the thing began to smell a bit. Now, it’s disgusting. I think it’s from the salt dispenser. I do add salt sometimes, but not being in a hard water area, it’s not that often. The filters in the bottom of the washer are clean, and I’ve adjusted the salt dispenser setting to 5 (it’s been all settings). Is there a reason why this should happen? I’ve cleaned it so may times – even put bleach in the salt dispenser! It works for a week or two, then just stinks again.
Any advice would be appreciated
On a Hotpoint note, we’re on our 3rd Hotpoint WD (washer dryer) in 6 years! The first 2 were WD62 machines, and simply fell apart so many times you wouldn’t believe it. The 3rd, delivered only 2 weeks ago (again replaced by Hotpoint), is a WD64. I’m told by Hotpoint it’s an improvement on the WD62 (can’t be any worse), and that the timer unit now has better anti vibration control. Is this true, or have I fallen for a line here?

ParticipantHi Neil,
Is the d/w emptying into a stand-pipe, or is it coupled up to a spigot under the sink? If the latter, it may well be collecting old food detritus and drainy smells. Strip and clean. The best way of actually cleaning the machine that we’ve come across over the years is to wait for the thump as the soap flap fires, stop the machine and shoot in the entire contents of a Jif lemon, and allow to complete cycle. It’ll cost you 50p in the supermarket.
Hotpoint WD62? The world’s first motorised pogo stick! Let us know how you go with the 64, we’re always interested in how the new appliances are performing in the field.

a great name there penguin. The dishwasher drains out of the hose directly into a 1.5 inch pipe., bypassing the sink trap. The smell isn’t coming from the yard drain at all, so I’m sure this isn’t the problem.
Thanks for the lemon trick, I’ll give that a go.
I will say our Hotpoint WD is heavily used, but the problems we had were usually related to the heater box falling off. I would also like your opinions on Hotpoint service. The engineers are ok, but as I understand it, they’ve shut down regional centres and replaced them with one big one. It took nearly 4 weeks after an engineer visit recently, before parts were delivered, and it was decided when another engineer visited it couldn’t be repaired! 4 weeks for parts – 10 phone calls, nothing ever logged!! The engineers who visited were embarrassed by the lack of service. Ah well, I’m sure my new WD64 will last forever.

hi,
salt should be used whatever the soft/hardness of the water in your area as its function is to regenerate the incoming water crystals within the filing chamber area of your appliance. The choice of washing detergent should be examined as the cleanser works electrically by suspending the soil in the water and any deposits left due to poor suspension will not wash out on the next cycle, but will lead quite quickly to smells.
Try a variety of different ones to see if you notice an improvement.Check that the inside of your appliance retains its shine and that the door seal along the bottom edge of the door is not trapping food desposits behind it….try a good degreaser available from your local supermarket

ParticipantNot being a company engineer, it’s a bit difficult to pass accurate comment on the state of manufacturers service networks. Rumblings from customers and through our local independents suggest that there is a shortage of company engineers, and this is stretching response times.
I take your it w/d was on extended warranty? You may want to rethink this for future applainces; certainly any independent (or UKW) repairer would have been able to repair a Hotpoint Washer DRyer more or less on the spot!
