    Hi.

After being switched on for a few minutes the oven trips the circuit breaker in the house fuse box. From searching the forums I guessed that the safety cutout thermostat was likely to be the culprit.

I’ve opened up the oven and what I’m assuming is the safety thermostat is circled in green on the photo:
It was mounted to the top panel of the oven. One of the terminals has noticible black deposits on it which you can see in this picture:

I was also concerned by all the blackening around the base of the grill element and where the wires from the safety thermostat passed over the back edge of the oven. The wires themselves are also scorched but the insulation still seems intact. The grill element had also failed peviously so would that explain all the blackening?

Basically, after all that, I’m just hoping for confirmation that the safety thermostat is still likely to be the problem before I order any parts.

    Thanks.

If you want to be certain before ordering any parts you will need to test the cutout, wiring, elements etc with a megger or multimeter. That’s the only way to be sure.

    Thanks for your reply.

I know how to check the element but how do I check the cutout and the wiring (I have a multimemter)?

This oven has been out of action for a couple of years and I thought I ought to get it going again. IIRC the oven element blew and the current one is its replacement. I don’t think that it has had any real use because it started cutting out after it was replaced. As I say, it was a couple of years ago so I’m not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure.

The element measures 24 ohms so I’m guessing that it’s OK (it’s rated 230V/2.2kW).

    Just been mulling this over…

I don’t have access to – or even know what to do with – a megger. If I were to remove the oven element and switch the oven on, then heat the cutout thermostat with, say, a soldering iron to see if the RCD trips, would that be a suitable way to see if the thermostat is the problem?

Re: Electrolux EOB944 – oven trips circuit breaker

I’ve been disconnecting various components to try and see if I can stop it from tripping the RCD. Disconnecting the elements didn’t have any effect but when the oven fan motor was disconnected the oven stayed on.

Is it a safe assumption that the motor is the problem, or could disconnecting it also disable some other component on, say, the main PCB that could be the faulty bit? I’m hoping not, as it would be great to have finally got to the bottom of this!
