could a standard defrost timer be fitted instead? appliance only 7 years old and a swine to remove so dont want to get involved without being sure.

Yes you can get a Supco one that has adjustable defrost times – all you need to do is get the wiring diagram and sort out the pin outs. The major issue for you Mark, is whether it will physically fit. Qualtex part number used to be F/P 22 or Supco part number EDT20
