KeymasterJust got a timer from EMW today and it now only has 6 mths warranty’ Not a year?
I needed to speak to Tony today about a board fault, asked him about this change of warranty AND THIS IS NOW THE CASE ON ALL THERE PCB/AND TIMERS. Due to the fact that the boards made now are of such a poor quality, and keep re failing, that he can not give them a years warranty any more?Well that don’t help on the repair side of things,??be interesting if we lose some jobs on this now ,????The year gtee used to sell them for me!
What do you think? :hmm:
canufix it

i have received notification that they are also incresing their prices.
i could justify 6 months guarantee if the price went down.
if i guarantee a repair for a year and the board or pcb fails after 6 months then i am in trouble.

I agree, i know EMW have been very fair on price, hardly changing them for years, but i find you now have to get around £100 for the average panel now to make the job worthwhile.
I’m seriously thinking of simply not bothering with any of the Merloni boards now, cant be bothered any more :rolls:

I noticed it too. Seems to me that Merloni boards are too much of a PITA. Half the time you end up spending a lot of time on diagnosis to make sure it is the board or to find what has caused the burn-up. Then you find you still have some other problem to solve after the board is fitted. I’m going to quote higher on these jobs from now on and if the customer says no, I’ll be happy.

Yes the 1 year Gtee was always a good selling point. Doubt if I will bother with Merloni modules any more as 6 month is not really on in my opinion.

I had to replace an EMW repaired Merloni PCB that was only fitted 4 months ago.
Also had a merloni board with blown tracks due to inlet valve wire shorting against case. When replaced multiple lights came up on the display PCB which could have been caused by a spike when the main board blew. The machine’s not worth repairing!
Again I agree with most of you, if we can only give customers 6 months guarantee on the boards couple with the other aggravation we get with Merloni electronics it’s no worth the hassle.

Problem we have, is putting a long guarantee on a poorly designed product. Our policy is to use better quality components to give a longer life but nothing can be done about the problems of mains voltages millimetres apart on an edge connector. Even Hotpoint only guarantee their repairs for 3 months. It is true that quite a few of our prices have increased (not all – more than half still remain the same) but we have held many products at the same price for over 10 years. Even we have to live in the real world where our costs increase every year (wages, power, postage etc). You will note that the cost of returning an item unwanted remains at £5+ vat ! Tony

I think everyone here who has used EMW for many years appreciates how stable the prices have been, as engineers we’re faced with the same dilemma, namely how to repair a product at a price the customer finds acceptable & offer a reasonable guarantee.
I just feel with the average £200 entry level Merloni its a lost cause , corporate greed & the throw away culture will prevail at that end of the market, but hey, it keeps factory workers in a job :rolls:

Tony i do see where you are coming from and a long guarantee on a poorly designed product.is not one that can be done!! your policy is to use better quality components. when this is done i must say that it works well……..and i dont get the call backs, but this Merloni SH….T
a lot of the time is not worth the hassle…?But thay will buy it????,,then thay ask us to fix it as if it was a bosch…..but this time for a few pounds £….p…. 😕 But still we carry on are good work trying to convert the pilgrims :?aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahOctober 8, 2008 at 11:28 am #263130bzz67
ParticipantRe: EMW, 6 MONTHS,NOW NOT 12?
always found EMW to be great, infact i have always given 6 months guarantee on all repairs, apart from recon pcb’s.(12 months). so 6 months is fine by me. i hate doing a 30 mile round trip to find we fitted a recon pcb 11 months previous & its gone again, then another 30 mile round trip to fit another one for no charge. EMW & us engineers lose out just because the board is rubbish.

Tony,
is this guarantee at 6 months for all boards or just “rubbish ones”?
Thanks
