ParticipantHaving read the forums, Is there a still a need for new Engineers. I have been told that there is a shortage but cannot seem to find any vacancies in my area ( North Wales ). I would like to start up my own business ( after training with Graham Dixon ) but without knowing the current situation, it’s a bit risky. I have tried some market research but to no avail as yet. I would need to take home approx £500.00 a week. Is this feasible ? .
Thank you in advance for any information.

Is it risky starting up your own business? Yes.
Especially if you need £500 a week take home.
In my books that works out to a gross salary of £35000 per year. (I used ‘The salary calculator’ to work that out.)
Lets say your running costs are £10000 per year. (Fuel, advertising, telephone, accountancy blah blah blah.)
That gives us a total of £45000.
Working at £40 per completed job.
You would require 1125 jobs per year.(22 jobs a week.)This is all very simplified but gives you some idea I hope.
Dont let me put you off though… 🙂

There are jobs but not many that will pay that sort of money, especially in the area.

Thank you both for your quick reply. I understand the risk as I have been self employed before albeit with contracts. I have spoken at length with Graham Dixon and he also mentioned about 0800 Repair franchise, i’ve been in touch with them but they haven’t come back to me yet, (maybe there’s no demand where I am ?) I’d still rather go my own route than pay out 10 – 15k for a franchise. I friend of mine is enquiring about Insurance work for ( DARA ?) any info would be appreciated if you have come across them.
Regards

This is a public forum and, therefore, offering opinion on any contracts or a company is really a bit beyond the pale so you’re only going to get a part of the story to prevent any comments that may prove “contentious” will we say. The reasoning being that we remain independent and try not to cast aspersion on the competition, even if they don’t play by the rules, we do.
If you are in the trade and haven’t got trade access you need to read this and follow the instructions. Just follow the steps and you’ll get trade access which will allow you tap into a whole world of information that we cannot get into on a public forum.
If you’ve got any problems feel free to drop me a line and I will try to fix it for you but do be aware that we need the proofs and they are rigorously adhered to for many reasons, not least of which are insurance, liability and confidentiality reasons.
