Trolls aside, I think we should call ourselves engineers. I have qualifications in mechanical and production engineering but am self taught in appliance repairs. I don’t consider that I was conning people into thinking I was a qualified appliance engineer when I first started my business. I get paid on results, if I can’t do a job, I don’t charge the customer. I would soon go out of business like that if there were lots of faults I failed to diagnose or repair. Calling yourself an engineer implies that you have specialised knowledge and understand how machinery works. This may not be needed for removing faulty components and fitting new ones but is required in our diagnostic role. I suppose in a big team you could have engineers and technicians. The engineers could do all the first visits but if a second visit is required due to the need to procure spares, a technician could be sent to complete the repair.

My brother is a chartered electrical engineer, having jumped through the appropriate hoops for the IEE. He was moaning the other day that he is no longer allowed to do wiring work in his own home.
When I worked in aerospace R&D, my job title was Senior Engineer. I worked in a team of Senior Engineers and Project Engineers. Several of us had degrees but I don’t think any of us had an engineering degree so were we all frauds?July 31, 2006 at 9:44 pm #183200cornwell40

I should really revert to my old title of Post Office engineer if qualifications are all you need to go by I can fix Post Offices.
‘As long as yer washer is next to a pole luv, I can fix it’
Saying that, my mate ( who was my business partner for a while) was an aircraft engineer on ground crew for MCR airport to name one with tickets coming out hs ears, couldn’t fix a washer to save his life. 😉Tony C

Bryan
It is true that many people who have high IQ’s and may attain a high level of academic achievement are hopeless when it comes to practical skills. Also it does not guarantee common sense as Brian notes, as clever people (on paper) can do the stupidest things at times, (as we all can) and can offer some very bad advice.
Knowledge and wisdom (the ability to do – or advise – the best action in a given situation) are not the same thing, and wisdom is certainly not dependant on the level of a persons intellect.
For someone like our friend to belittle those whose talents are more practical is just blind stupidity. What good is knowledge or design unless someone is able to transform it into something useful.
In the great scheme of things we all have our individual talents and a role in life and as such should value each others skills no matter how menial they may appear to be.
Andy 🙂

I’m sure at some point in his life when his moms washer/cooker /fridge/dryer etc broke down and she called on the services of a real engineer to come and fix it so her little troll could go off to univesity in a clean pair of pants she didn’t call them a REPAIRMAN and i bet she had a big smile on her face when the real engineer left 😆 😆 😆 hmmm i wonder if thats what disturbed him and thats why he hates us engineers with the passion he does 😈
