telephone engineer, alarm engineer, appliance engineer, boiler engineer mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, gas engineer, service engineer.
Its not a word protected by patent.
Each is qualified and trained to fulfill the task of his or her discipline.
The training and qualifications are to match the chosen career.

The word engineer according to the dictionary is one who constructs or mends engines, amongst other things. Its not about how many qualifications one has. That just proves your understanding and ability to carry out your chosen career even if its mending appliances, which many find enjoyable.

Why not contact HM armed forces and complain about their use of the word Engineer, Royal no less. You may see them building a bridge, removing mines all sorts of things, but probably not doing what you consider to be the work of a qualified Engineer.

It was, but I think that feelings on the comments where, shall we say, running high.

He’s history. If he returns under another guise, as he did yesterday IIRC, he’ll be history again.

I don’t believe in what he said, whatsoever, if someone has a trade that they’re specialised in, then, in my opinion, they’re an engineer!

Technically, i’m a qualified ‘Network Engineer’, although, that probably classes me as a ‘Network Repairman’.

    Troll.

Re: Engineer – What’s An Engineer

I recollect this topic being discussed in another thread some moons ago and it was agreed that correctly we should be called technicians!!

Having said that the term ‘engineer’ is very broad in its scope. eg. the men who drove the old steam trains were called ‘engineers’ and i don’t think many of them would have had a University degree (but i might be wrong).

You could argue that they (the ‘real engineers’) have hijacked the term and perverted its true meaning as it is evident that their definition is not the same as in the English dictionaries.

This person is obviously very proud of his achievements and does not want to be dragged down to the same level as a humble washing machine repair man – bless him!

Of course there is also the possibility that he was a successful wind up merchant – some people do get their kicks like this 😉 I suppose we shall never really know…………..

    Andy 😀

Re: Engineer – What’s An Engineer

Engineer is derived from the word “engine” and is a generic term used for anyone who works in a mechanical capacity.

Over the years, like many words in the English language, the word has evolved to mean different things to different people but still the general perception is someone that works in some sort of technical capacity or “engineers” schemas.

A civil engineer will design buidings, bridges etc. working out stress factors and all that sort of stuff.

A network engineer will design and/or maintain a computer network.

A chemical engineer will work with biological and/or chemical agents.

An electrical engineer will work with electrical schema.

Now, you tell me what have they all got in common?

The only thing that they have in common is the term “engineer”. The jobs are worlds apart, just as these jobs are from ours. Yet the fact remains that any technical job or a job involving the maintenence or design of mechanical devices are regarded as “engineering”.

So since we work with mechanical devices why shouldn’t we be labelled as engineers?

No reason whatsoever. By definition 2, anybody who drives a car is an engineer.

    Engineer:-

    1. One who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering.
    2. One who operates an engine.
    3. One who skillfully or shrewdly manages an enterprise.

Just shows how stupid matey boys arguments were. He was probably by definition an engineer long before he ‘qualified’ to be one.

Just as a matter of interest Ken, how is it possible to lock someone out from the public side of whitegoods as most IP addresses are dynamically assigned when logging on to your ISP ie. he will have a different address when he logs on again.

Was that definitely him back last night under the name Ken_W ❓

He doesn`t seem to have latched on to the IP address giving him away 😕 , maybe don`t teach common sense at university :).

We can’t tell 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} if it was him or not due to the dynamic IP address issue that Andy mentioned but the user name he chose plus his email address was a Yahoo one as previous, he used asfaq as part of that and the very nature of his post would lead you to believe so 😆

Plus, look at the way he went from poor grammar and punctuation to almost perfect in his last reply.

To answer Andy’s question, we can only ban the user name and/or the email address Andy due to that very reason, it may well block someone else on the same IP. Unless they are on a static IP or a company range of IP’s which would block anyone from the same building or buildings sharing a server of course 😉

That leaves it wide open for any possible “troll” to simply get a new email address and sign up under a new user name, as in the case of Dave_P and mjk8.

That sounds like alot of effort just to annoy people 😕
