    Hi,
Wondered if someone could help me rather urgently. My oven stopped getting hot over 150 degrees. I phoned the manufacturer (it’s over 10 years old so not in warranty) and they got one of their preferred suppliers to come and look at the problem at a call out fee of course. They came and said we needed a new thermostat, grill element (as it was bent), clock (it was broken by someone who’d cleaned the over some months before) and two hinges (the oven cleaner had bent the hinges when putting the door back on). This all came to £600 in spare parts. We then found whitegoods who could supply at half the price, but the company fixing the oven put on 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} as it’s a ‘perk’ of the job. So not only do they get their 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} vat back as they’re a Ltd company, but they also charge me another 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. Nice. Anyway, they ordered the parts and it took over 6 weeks for everything to be delivered to them, not answering calls/emails along the way after we’d paid nearly £400 for everything. Slightly worrying. They came back last week to fix it all, after I’d said I’d have to request a refund and would get the parts myself and go elsewhere. However, they didn’t check the oven before leaving and that night we went to turn the oven on (fan oven) and it wouldn’t get hot again over 150 degrees. We tried turning it to other things like grill, normal oven etc. and it started to get hot. However, my partner realised that when we were turning the knob it was shorting, i.e. you could hear a spark. After two days of attempting to get the oven working (it would sometimes get to heat and sometimes it wouldn’t), it then blew up with a loud bank and sparks flying out of the knob on the oven front. We called the engineers back out who arrived the next day and said it was just bad timing and we would need a replacement which would cost £180 including VAT. The thing is, they took the whole cooker top off and the front to replace the clock/timer. How can this be that it never worked after them ‘fixing’ it and that it was just bad timing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m now worried about them fixing this issue as we may incur even more work if they break something. What are the chances of this happening and it being just bad timing? Thanks.

Re: Enquiry on blown oven knob

That’s a tough ask to mediate to be honest. From your statement it appears that they may have overlooked the outlying problem from the start. But that is pure speculation for my part based on my experience in this trade.

The overall cost is mounting all the while and the solution offered by the repairer unconvincing. I don’t buy the “ bad timing” explanation.

What is the make and full model number of this appliance anyway!

    Hi

Are the engineers WTA members ? If so contact the WTA.

    Hiya,

It’s a Brittania range cooker, I don’t know the model number off hand.

I don’t buy that it’s ‘bad timing’ either and have now emailed Brittania. They were the one’s who referred my issue to this company. Not impressed!

Not sure they are registered, I’ll check – but should be I guess if Brittania are using them as their engineers!

    😡
