I was thinking today about all the epidemic failures we have had over the years. It seems every era has one problem that fails in plague like numbers, some of us probably founded our businesses on some of them. from memory here is my list in, as far as my memory allows, chronological order starting when I did in the late 70’s.

    Hotpoint push button extensions
Bendix/ Philco door interlocks (fault was no spin)
Zanussi & Zanussi made Hotpoint door handles
    AEG door handle springs
    Bendix Philco door E springs.
    Indesit 2000 door interlocks.
    Zanussi washcraft pumps
    Zanussi washcraft door handles
    Candy filter housings
    Candy drum pulley faults
    AEG 561 style leaking pumps
Zanussi 3 and 4 tag door interlocks
Bosch drain pumps (leaks and stalls)
    Hpt WMA bearings
    and up to date with
    Bosch carbons
    bosch/ Neff fan elements
    Smeg fan elements

anything I have missed? Yes I purposly missed out Hotpoint Carbons as they have been a main stay during all this period.

    Re: epidemic failures

As a former Hotpoint engineer circa 1968/80 I would add

All 1600 electronics, Timer, module & PMC. ( Power Micro Circuit)

Top loaders fitted with the first generation two pole motors, pathetic clutch from twin tub and elastic drive belt, no spin and endless pump leaks.

Original 1850 that had three door micro switches, supposed to use ‘dynamic braking’ reversing the current using the heater as a large resistor to bring the motor to a sudden screeching halt if you opened the door at full spin speed. Most of the time it just blew the electronics when you closed the door. 😥

    9500 series door hinges.

Nice one Mark , just off the top of my head

Hotpoint WM – Door Interlocks and Hinges and Top Restraint Springs
    Beko – Fan Oven Elements
    Bosch/Neff – Fan Oven Motors
    Zanussi – On/Off Switches
    Hotpoint – Dryer Stat Kits
    Servis – Modules

Sure there`ll be plenty more on the way 😆

    where to start…..
    indesit mechanical pumps
    indesit spiders
    hoover mth and gtr timers
    hoover t/t dual control pump
    colston t/t dog clutch
    philips element/toc assy
    philips hn3156 motor clutch
bendix 7147 outer tubs and shockers

i even seem to remember watching in awe as our workbench was being used to repair countless hotpoint motors and modules – a skill i never did pick up completely

simplicity, yet i would pay thousands to go back to the ” good old days ” when i was learning my trade

    Re: epidemic failures

Philco top weight brackets (tub, motor and module gone)
Hotpoint 9525 door stuck due to pecker getting whacked. (worked for them then. Guaranteed getting home early)
Hotpoint plastic drum w/d. Front plate seal leaking.
Hotpoint 9525 door gasket retainer too big.(Take it outside to shorten it)
    Hotpoint Microprofile motor choke wiring

Ah the good old days 🙄

zanussi d/w rinse aid dispenser leaking onto wiring harness and catching light!
during the late 80,s and early 90,s all the models had to be visited, checked and modified if faulty.
    was a good overtime earner!

    Hpt/Creda T/D belts,
    Hpt’s with cracked bases,
    Zanussi bearings,
    Whirlpool winged nuts,
Italian Electrics (abit of a generalisation)

    Re: epidemic failures

Hoover and Hotpoint pressure vessel blockages and element failures. Rarely get those now 😥 since moving to this soft water area. But get plenty of spider rot.

And not forgetting the Z30 / DW400 wiring loom recalls and the 1200 spin washing machine motor failiures.

    Gentlemen……..

The star of this particular little show, and playing in an appliance near you……..

    The magnetic drain pump motor.

A boon to repairers since 1992 and still no improvement. It can’t really get much better, can it?

Chris. Would you say they are that much worse than the old ones? And don’t forget they use 30 watts as opposed to 90 although they may take longer to pump out a drum. ❓

    Re: epidemic failures

I would say much worse, the failure rate is three or four times that of a ‘decent quality’ shaded pole motor. 😥

I’ve had to change quite a few AEG old type pumps which leaked. Was this just because AEG machines last longer, enough time for the pumps to fail or were their pumps not “decent quality”?

    Re: epidemic failures

They may have leaked after several years, modern pumps are noisy within 12 to 18 months, and fail at an alarming rate. This afternoon I went to a Hotpoint 18730 around 25 years old, unfortunately the backplate had gone but the original pump which was manufactured by Hotpoint themselves is still perfect.
