ParticipantMy 10-year-old Hotpoint WM64 goes into sudden short, sharp burst of spin during the washing cycle (starting on E on the dial, but that’s all I’ve used since prob began).
I’ve taken no action so far other than rotating the program knob a couple of times, without any effect.
The only repairs over the years have been one door hinge replacement, two sets of motor brushes and a clear out of the pump.
Can anyone suggest what I should be looking at/for?

It could be some of the wiring chafing near the front of the motor. With the mains plug removed check the two thin wires that come out of the tacho ( the small round doofer on the front of the motor)
These can sometimes rub on the motor casting. The small magnet inside the tacho can also come loose. In fact check all of the wiring to the motor harness and motor plug connections.
What type of motor does it have, is it a GDA/Hotpoint motor or the later AEG/FHP motor. When you fitted the brushes did they slot in or did you have to remove four screws to change them?

Thanks for the response,
The motor has no name. The only identity is “AC Motor Type 904/XXXX for speed control”. As far as I remember, the brushes came in plastic holders which clipped into the motor body.
On the brush end of the motor, there is a 2 cm approx metal ring with two wires attached. This is clamped over the end of the motor shaft. It’s possible to slightly slide this with effort. I’m sure this can be fixed in position if that’s the problem – but is the position crucial, or should it just look symmetrical?

That is the ‘tacho’ my colleague referred to and chances are the magnet inside may have come loose. Carefully remove the coil (“metal ring with 2 wires attached”) and check the magnet within is secure on the shaft.

Thanks iadom/Martin – checking seems to have cured the problem!

It rarely does for any length of time, suggests a possible break in the wiring harness somewhere if the tacho magnet was nice and tight. -
