ParticipantI have a Zanussi ZWF14581W Washing Machine. When I turned the controller to Spin it tried multiple times to lock the door then came up with E40 which means there is a problem with the door. Have opened/closed/slammed and powered off for 5 mins but still get same result no matter which cycle I try. Anyone know the next steps to take? I am a retired electrical engineer so have the tools and safety knowledge but no experience of domestic appliances.I can see that the latch can be accessed by removing a couple of screws and that there is a button which gets pressed on the door itself. Any help, detailled if possible, would be appreciated.

If its showing E40 and the door is closed then either the door lock has failed or what can happen on this model is that the door switch can damage the main board. Its also possible for the wiring connection to be burnt out either at the door switch or board end. The button on the door you refer to is just a mechanical child lock which when engaged prevents the door from closing at all. . So first thing to do is release the clip around the door seal and remove the two screw’s securing the door switch and check that first.

OK, Thanks Guys. I’ve removed the door seal nd removed the interlock. The cable connector and interlock terminations both show signs of overheating (dark brown, burnt) around pins 4 and 5. The cable itself looks oK. Do you think I will get away with just changing the interlock switch or should I replace the cable too. Is there a way of checking which bit has actually caused the problem?

my experience is that you will need to recrimp the terminals with good quality insulated connecters
doesnt last long if the wiring has burnt

Are you saying that the interlock might be OK and I should just try replacing the current connector block with individual crimp connectors?

:lesson: Dont crimp new connectors on its not good practice as its easy to then confuse the four wires as you could then fit them anyway around ,also if the amp tag isn’t crimped properley then the same problem you’ve got will just happen again !!! . The cable section can be ordered for under £10 and is easily replaced as it only fits between the switch and the board. You will need to also replace the switch though.

Bought a new interlock and cleaned up the connector as best I could. Probably needed a new cable assembly really but that would have been another £20. Easy enough to fit but only lasted one wash without problem. On next wash it stopped with E40 whilst full with towels and water. Could see that interlock terminals (4&5) were beginning to blacken again. In my experience, this will normally only happen if there is a poor contact and is caused by arcing. Decided to take advice of helo_75. Bought a pack of good quality fully insulated blue crimp connectors. Fortunately I still had a crimp tool from a job I had 30 years ago. Slight problem due to bulkiness of these connectors so decided to cut the original connector in half and just use new crimp connectors for the 2 bad terminals. Has worked without incident for the last week of intensive catch-up washing. Thanks again for your help.

The amp tag’s. However if you have used a proper crimper for the amp tag’s and not pliers you might get away with it to be fair.
