ParticipantI’ve got a Hotpoint WMA34 which has just reached 4 years old. It has already had the bearings and drum replaced but has an intemittent leak from the front of the machine. Domestic and General have sent me a quote for one years extended warranty, for £71. The question is, would you recommend I take out this warranty and then get them to repair the leak or not bother with the warranty and get it repaired independantly ?
i.e. which option is likely to work out cheaper given that I know I have a problem with the machine ? Thanks in advance.February 7, 2006 at 6:42 pm #163692kwatt
KeymasterTough call to be honest.
My gut feeling is to take the warranty as the WMA series isn’t exactly reknowned for it’s reliability and bearings collapse on a regualr basis. I know this not from doing them, but from the fact that the suppliers and the company formerly known as Hotpoint, now Merloni/Indesit, have a kit to repair them on special.
But generally there’s no such thing as an intermittent leak, it either leaks or it doesn’t. There’s a few exceptions to that, but not many. If you check the soap drawer you may find that it’s clogged up and occasionally overflowing.
Other than that I can’t help much as, thankfully, I’ve not had to face many WMA’s. 😉

Soap drawer leaks are quite common on this machine, after cleaning out the drawer as Ken suggests, make sure that your water pressure is not to high, adjust the inlet with the taps to the machine so that you get a steady flow rather than a loud gushing, hissing noise. Also make sure that if you are using powder or tablets ( if not you should be) that the small blue divider at the back of the soap drawer is situated correctly. If it is you should see a small tumbler pouring powder facing you on the top face of the divider. The other position is for liquids and will cause the powder to flow over the sides of the drawer if it is the wrong way round.
As yet I have not seen any of the later modified drum/bearing kits fail on these machines. My fingers are well and truly crossed ATM. 🙂

Thanks for the reply folks, I’ll try adjusting the pressure and see what happens. If the tray was overflowing I would have expected to see some water droplets on the front of the machine but I’m not, just a small pool of clear water on the floor. There’s nothing at the back of the machine so I doubt there is a problem with the connections to the taps.

KeymasterHi JPM,
Yeah we get that a lot. Even though you don’t see water droplets doesn’t mean its not running down there and since gravity does its job all that you see is a puddle on the floor. Happens a lot on Servis machines and customers swear it’s not coming from the soapbox as they can’t see the run, but it is. 😉
Other than that it will be internal.
